March Success Story

Kaitlin
2009 Lynch Family Legacy Scholarship recipient

It has always been a dream of mine to attend the University of Florida, and become part of the Gator Nation.  I have always looked up to my older sister, who also attended the University of Florida.  All my hard work paid off the moment I received my letter of acceptance from the admissions office at UF.

Although I was more than prepared with the knowledge to succeed in college, it still was a difficult process to budget and to make ends meet.  With the help of the Lynch Family Scholarship, I have been able to alleviate some of the costs, using the money I was awarded towards the payments for tuition and books.  Thanks to this scholarship I have been given the opportunity to achieve my personal lifelong goal of attending the University of Florida and I plan to go to medical school after I complete my four years of undergraduate work.

Note from the President

The Hillsborough Education Foundation's Annual Fund - that steady stream of support which we can count on each year - is the lifeblood which provides critical support for our programs.  Below you'll read about a couple of the fundraisers which contribute significantly to the Annual Fund.   The feedback that we get on the Apple Appeal, the Play FORE Education Charity Golf Classic, and the Hooked on Education Fishing Tournament is that they are fun - which is one of our biggest goals with each fundraiser we do.  But even more important are the stalwart supporters for each who allow us to host quality events, introduce attendees of the events to our programs, and support our Annual Fund.

Our thanks go out to the many sponsors of these events.  We list them individually as the events happen, but it's worth repeating the support of our key stakeholders, our Presenting and Host Sponsors.  Thank you to Busch Gardens for the Apple Appeal, Batson-Cook for the Play FORE Education Charity Golf Classic, and Wilder Architecture and All State Construction for the Hooked on Education Fishing Tournament.   These are the leaders who make it happen ... and we're very grateful!!

Play FORE Education Charity Golf Classic

Fifth Third Bank has been involved with the Hillsborough Education Foundation for the past five years, since we moved into the market in 2005.   We have worked with this organization on a variety of events but in my opinion, the annual golf classic "Play Fore Education" is one of the best golf events that we participate in locally.  Not only is the event held at a great venue for golf, The Avila Golf & Country Club, but it tends to draw a tremendous group of participants from the local business community each year to support programs for students and teachers in Hillsborough County.   We use this event as an opportunity to entertain good clients and also to expose them to the excellent work that the Hillsborough Education Foundation is doing in our community.  For us, being connected with a worthy group locally is a core component of our mission statement and part of our continual focus on the Tampa Bay community.
Golf enthusiasts compete in the 2010 Charity Golf Classic

The Foundation, along with Presenting Sponsor Batson-Cook Company, was pleased to host the annual Play FORE Education Charity Golf Classic.  New features at this year's tournament included: partnering local business leaders with School Board members and leaders in Hillsborough County Public Schools for the Executive Shootout, and the Callaway Par 3 Closest to the Pin Challenge.  Thanks to the support of the tournament sponsors and participants, more than $93,000 was raised to benefit the Foundation's programs.

Congratulations to this year's big winners!

The Starlight Safari returns

Apple Appeal photo with wordingBack by popular demand, the Foundation's Board of Directors is pleased to host the second Apple Appeal "Starlight Safari" at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay on May 14, 2010.  This unique event premiered last year and is planned by a hardworking group of Board members and community volunteers.  The Apple Appeal is the Board's annual fundraiser and serves as a way for them to have a direct hand in rallying community support for the Foundation's mission.

This exclusive adult event includes a pre-event online auction where anyone is open to place early bids on this year's silent auction offerings.  During the event, guests will be guided thorugh the dark wilderness with lanterns and pith helmets and learn about the wildlife surrounding them.  These tools will be traded for night vision goggles for a ride through the open plain and a chance to hand feed the park's gentle giants.  Click here to see photos from last year's exciting expedition!

Sponsorship opportunities are available and event tickets are limited to 200, so register today!  Click here or contact Cheryl Hedrick for more information.
Scholar Profile

Aakash M. Patel
Sickles High PTSA Scholarship recipient, 2002

As a senior and Sickles High's Student Government Vice President, Aakash was selected as a PTA Student of the Month.  Because of this recognition, he believed his chances at receiving the Foundation's Sickles High PTSA Scholarship were rather slim.  However, with the encouragement of his guidance counselor, Aakash applied and was selected as the 2002 recipient.

When he started his freshman year at Florida State University, Aakash enrolled in 30 hours of classes.  With this came the high expense of course books.  "The money awarded to me was used to offset the cost of books," explains Aakash, "I was very thankful for the scholarship money. Without it, I would not have enrolled in as many classes. Since I did, I was able to earn a second degree."  After much hard work, Aakash graduated from Florida State in 2006 with a BA in English Literature and Political Science.

Now that he is a Seminole alum, Aakash is giving back to the community that helped him reach his goals.  He has his sights set on being involved in the Foundation's scholarship program by becoming a mentor to Hillsborough County students.  "My brother is about to enter Hillsborough High next year," he says, "and it's so important to have a voice that has recently been in their shoes."

The Tampa Bay Lightning promotes education

Lightning logoIn 2001 the Tampa Bay Lightning began working with the Foundation to offer Education Night discounts to hockey games and other family friendly events.  This was an attractive partnership for both organizations for many reasons.  The Lightning was able to introduce hockey to students and families throughout the county, while benefiting education in a new and unique way.  The Foundation was able to use the discounts as a way to bring schools and families together in support of education.  Many schools have used the games as an incentive for FCAT testing and other initiatives.

"The Tampa Bay Lightning and the Lightning Foundation are committed to supporting educational programs that enhance the lives of children across the Bay area. Hillsborough County schools foster success, both in the classroom and beyond, which can be accredited to fantastic leadership, highly regarded teachers and motivated students," said Kasey Smith, Executive Director of the Lightning Foundation.  "For these reasons, it is easy to understand why we greatly value our relationship with the school system and the Hillsborough Education Foundation."

In just the last four years, the partnership has generated more than $35,000 for the Foundation through Education Night discounts
.  The Foundation is grateful to the St. Pete Times Forum, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Lightning Foundation for their continued support of Hillsborough County's students, teachers, and schools and looks forward many more years of this important partnership.
