Ansberto Vallejo
Foundation scholarship recipient & 2005 Ida S. Baker Diversity Educator of the Year

Things might have turned out very differently for Ansberto Vallejo had he not received a postsecondary scholarship from the Hillsborough Education Foundation.  He might not have been Hillsborough County's Ida S. Baker Diversity Educator of the Year for 2004-2005.

When Vallejo was a senior at East Bay High School he was accepted to USF.  He had already completed the paperwork to join the Navy,  which is where he says he would be had he not come up with a way to pay from his education at USF.  Thankfully, the  scholarship he received from the Foundation enabled him to attend USF and graduate with a bachelors degree in Education.

Vallejo provides a positive influence on his students by the example of his own life and successes.  To read the rest of Ansberto Vallejo's story, click here.

Note from the President

The Giving USA Foundation's annual report is a much anticipated look at giving and generosity across the country and across various sectors of the non-profit world.

The data is in and total giving for 2008 is estimated to be $307.65 billion - a huge number, but a decrease of 2.0% from 2007.  Giving to education took a slightly harder hit with a 5.5% decline.  While this is the first decline since 1987, it is minor when looking at indicators such as the Dow Jones (-37%), corporate profits (-18%), and unemployment (7.2%).

As the year draws to a close and we take a moment to step back, all of us at the Hillsborough Education Foundation would like to take this opportunity to thank our supporters.  We strive to work with our donors and partners in each of their unique situations so that they get the most impact for their investment in education.  We want to connect the students, teachers, and schools who benefit from our various programs with the generous individuals and organizations who make these programs possible so they can appreciate the benefit.

Happy Holidays!  Thanks for all you've done in 2009 and before ... and here's looking to a healthy and prosperous 2010!!

Foundation Spotlight

Cyrus Spurlino
Teaching Tools for Hillsborough Schools donor

My motivation to help Teaching Tools for Hillsborough Schools comes from having many educators in my life.  My aunt was principal of an elementary school for 38 years.  I have a daughter-in-law who is a 5th grade teacher in Merritt Island.  A very close friend of mine is the principal of a high school in Dayton, Ohio.  I know how dedicated they are to the children in their care.  And I know they must often spend their own money on supplies.  Teaching Tools for Hillsborough Schools is a very good program that helps both teachers and students.  I thank you for all that you do.
Empowering Effective Teachers Reception

In recognition of the district's historical accomplishment when it received the Intensive Partnerships to Empower Effective Teachers grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Hillsborough Education Foundation hosted the Empowering Effective Teachers Reception on Thursday, December 10 at Jefferson High School.  Approximately 1,000 local business leaders, community supporters, and government officials attended this reception to kick off the seven-year process to improve teacher effectiveness in Hillsborough County Public Schools.

Click here for more information about the Intensive Partnerships to Empower Effective Teachers grant, including a message from the Superintendent.

Students from the Culinary Arts Programs at: East Bay, Jefferson, Leto, Sickles, Strawberry Crest, and Wharton high schools provided delicious hors d'oeuvres and desserts for the reception.
Engaging your business to benefit the community

Brian P. Keenan
President, CEO - Fifth Third Bank (Tampa Bay)
Supporter, Play FORE Education Charity Golf Classic

I am extremely proud to be a part of an organization that is committed to giving back to the community. At Fifth Third Bank we understand the value of the communities we serve and continue to invest in community development to help bring people together and strengthen our local economies.

At Fifth Third we give back to the community in a variety of ways - our "Jeans for Charity", helping with silent auctions, our Dream Guard Seminars on financial literacy, and through volunteerism.  In addition to serving on the Board of Directors for the Hillsborough Education Foundation, I'm also active on the planning committee for the Foundation's Play FORE Education Charity Golf Classic.

In addition to the Captain's Choice format tournament, this year we will have a newly formatted Executive Shootout challenge.  Key school district personnel will be assisting with the shootout and working with players. Shimberg Family Teacher Recognition

On Tuesday, December 1 members of the Shimberg Family, School Board, the Superintendent, and Foundation staff gathered at the Palma Ceia Golf & Country Club to recognize three outstanding teachers from Hillsborough County Public Schools.  The teachers represented an elementary, middle, and high school in the county. This year's honorees included: Japera Helene Hodges of Witter Elementary, Terry Patrick Bigelow of Rampello Downtown Partnership School, and Alan Schism of Plant City High School.  Robert Shimberg had warm compliments for each honoree and the Shimberg Family gave a gift of $1,250 to each.  Congratulations to these fine teachers for this well-deserved honor!

Thank you Learning Gate Community School!

For the fifth year, Learning Gate first graders held a holiday drive to collect pencils for Teaching Tools for Hillsborough Schools.  This year they collected more than 3,500 pencils for the program's Supply Store.  The first grade teachers use this drive to also help teach students such skills as: counting, grouping, making charts and graphs, and speaking in public.  Thank you to the teachers and students at Learning Gate for your wonderful contribution to our mission!

Learning Gate first graders proudly display their donation to Teaching Tools.
