Note from the President

It feels as if summer has just started, but students will be back in school by the time you receive our next issue of The Core.  As you can see from the articles below, it's been a busy summer and it is shaping up to be a very busy school year.  We've had very exciting things happen (Congratulations to Megan Allen - see below) and some extraordinarily exciting things planned.  We look forward to the new school year, the students returning, and more opportunities as we launch into our next 20 years of serving students, teachers, and schools in our community!

The only constant is change - and you'll see from what you're reading that we've changed the look of our newsletter.  It now has a name, The Core!  We hope that you find this easy to read and to find the information you need from us.  Click here and let us know what you think of the new format.

Spotlight On: FOX 13 Care Force

FOX 13 is proud to help support this year's "Stuff the Bus" school supply drive.  The mission of the FOX 13 CARE FORCE is to make a positive contribution in our community by motivating viewers to volunteer, donate or participate in community outreach events.  On Friday, August 21st, FOX 13 will set up a school supply drop-off point at the station, located at 3213 W. Kennedy Blvd. in Tampa.  Be sure to come out and support this worthy cause!  To learn more about projects the FOX 13 CARE FORCE is involved in or to sign up for our newsletter visit us online.
Now's the Time to Stuff the Bus!

The Foundation's annual Stuff the Bus Campaign is underway! From now through September 1st, businesses and organizations all over Tampa Bay are collecting school supplies for the Teaching Tools Supply Store.  Suncoast Schools Federal Credit Union, FOX 13, St. Petersburg Times, The Bank of Tampa, and the Hillsborough County Tax Collector are just a few of this year's participants.

Want to make a donation?  Be on the lookout for the official Stuff the Bus campaign poster at your daily stops.  You can also visit the big yellow school buses at the following locations:

August 18:
Office Depot - 6285 W. Waters Ave. and 211 N. Dale Mabry Hwy

August 21:
FOX 13 Studios - 3213 W Kennedy Blvd.
(See Spotlight on FOX 13 Care Force for more information)

Check the Foundation website for updates on where you can drop off supplies!  Interested in hosting a supply drive?  Contact Laura Grucza at (813) 740-7651.
New Teachers Learn About Hillsborough Classrooms

Apple Appeal This fall, over 250 new educators will start teaching in Hillsborough County Public Schools.  To welcome and prepare them for their new journeys, the county hosted New Teacher Orientation for three days in July.  Numerous Tampa Bay businesses took this opportunity to introduce themselves to the area's newest faces.  We would like to thank all those who contributed to this three-day program:

New Teacher Orientation Platinum Sponsors

Hillsborough Classroom Teachers Association
Planet Beach Contempo Spa
St. Petersburg Times Newspaper in Education
Suncoast for Kids Foundation made possible by the Suncoast Schools Federal Credit Union
VALIC

We would like to extend a warm welcome to all of Hillsborough County's newest teachers.  We look forward to seeing all of the wonderful things you will accomplish with our students!

Put Success in the Hands of Every Student

Mark your calendars for the third annual Tools 4 Schools Breakfast!

September 2, 2009
7:30am - 9:00am
Renaissance Hotel at International Plaza

The Tools 4 Schools Breakfast is the Foundation's largest fundraising event for Teaching Tools for Hillsborough Schools.  The event brings together members of the Tampa Bay community to support the at-risk students in Hillsborough County Public Schools.  Through pledge donations the event raises funds to support the Teaching Tools Supply Store.  Hillsborough County's and Florida's Teacher of the Year Megan Allen and other educators will speak to guests about how important this program is to students all over the county.  Some of these students will also be in attendance to show just how important this program is to their futures.

For more information on sponsorship opportunities or to reserve your seat, contact June LaPorta at (813) 231-1937.
