Spotlight On:
Jim Major
Apple Appeal 'Starlight Safari' Chair

One of the ongoing and never-ending goals of the Foundation is to continue to make our existence known to the residents of Hillsborough County.  In developing the Apple Appeal, we clearly had that goal in mind, and we think we successfully made great gains in that direction with our third annual event May 8th.

In addition to the obvious fund raising benefit of $65,000, we introduced the Foundation to new friends who, hopefully, will support our efforts in the future.  What's more, the event has been heavily covered in the electronic and print media, where we also had the opportunity to not only promote the event, but also tell our story.

Note From The President

Another school year is coming to a close and with it the flurry of activity surrounding the year's end.  We've had the opportunity to host events celebrating accomplishments and thanking donors for a number of our programs this month (Teaching Tools for Hillsborough Schools, School Enrichment, and Scholarships).  It's always nice to say "thank you", but even more so this year with many supporters making tough decisions of how much they can contribute to help our students, teachers, and schools.  We are certainly appreciative, and we enjoy connecting the students and teachers in the district who benefit from those programs so the community can see how important their support is!  In so many ways in our various programs, the community does make a difference!

You'll also see in this issue some of the fun ways that our supporters have been helping us as the school year winds down.  Our sincere thanks to the 200+ who attended our 'Starlight Safari' at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay; and to Busch Gardens (especially their educational staff) for making this a memorable night for everyone involved.  The Rays continue to show why they are Hillsborough's reining champ as the District Partner of the Year.  We had a great Spirit Night to celebrate the outstanding educators in our district and then a successful Broadcast Auction benefiting the Hillsborough Education Foundation and our Pinellas colleagues.

Apple Appeal Soars with Donor Generosity

The 2009 Apple Appeal 'Starlight Safari' is being hailed as the best yet!  This unique expedition through the wilds of the African Serengeti would not have been possible without the incredible generosity of one of Tampa Bay's most popular entertainment attractions - Busch Gardens Tampa Bay.  The park agreed to join forces with the Foundation to host this year's Apple Appeal fundraiser, and they brought the event to a brand new level.  Walking and truck tours took guests all around the park after dark, where they got up close and personal with many fascinating inhabitants of the African plains.  To view a slideshow of all the festivities, click here

Community partnerships become more important year after year.  The Foundation is extremely grateful to everyone at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay who took part in ensuring the Apple Appeal 'Starlight Safari' far surpassed anyone's expectations.  It was with their help that the event was able to raise more than $65,000 for the Foundation's programs.

Hillsborough Reads Builds Better Readers

It is a proven fact that students' reading abilities by the third grade are strong indicators of dropout rates.  Students who have inadequate reading skills by the time they reach third grade have lower chances for academic success.  In the last year the Hillsborough Reads program helped over 400 students in 14 of the county's schools improve their reading skills with more than 16,000 tutoring hours.  The program not only gives students the ability to read, it leads them to develop a deep passion for it.  Reading is no longer something they must do for school, it is something they want to do for themselves.  Click here for more information on the Hillsborough Reads program and how you can get involved.
Budding Artists Help Teaching Tools Say Thank You

Blue presentWithout donor support, Teaching Tools for Hillsborough Schools would not be able to supply the essential tools for learning to more than 50,000 at-risk students.  The program enlisted the help of King High School's Culinary Operations program and a group of the county's talented artists to express their gratitude for the donors' unwavering generosity.  The Teaching Tools Donor Appreciation Night featured entries from the 6th Annual Crayon Masterpiece program, and offered some works for purchase in a silent auction.  Hundreds of entries were submitted for this year's program, which provides arts awareness to Hillsborough County students in grades K-8 and helps them develop an appreciation for works of art, both young and old.  A grand prize winner and runner-up were selected from each grade level by volunteer judges.  Click here to view all winning submissions.

Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve. It doesn't matter whether you're a lion or a gazelle-when the sun comes up, you'd better be running.
