Andrea Zelman, Fowler White Boggs P.A.

Fowler White Boggs P.A. is proud to be a member of the Teaching Tools' Carton Club. Each month, our law firm adds one extra carton of copy paper to our order, so that we can help the teachers in Hillsborough County to have the supplies they need to educate the children of our community. Each carton we send to Teaching Tools gives one teacher enough paper to last a year! We hope that other companies will join us in supporting the teachers and students of Hillsborough County by becoming a member of this worthwhile club. Help us stock the store!

Note From The President

Perhaps the most disturbing trend in the current economic downturn is the loss of jobs - it's impacting so many families.  According to the latest figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, unemployment in the Bay area is now over 10%.  Some of those jobs won't be returning.

But many of these folks are turning this into an opportunity.  Looking at the future, they are preparing themselves for another career.  Case in point, enrollment in Career and Technical Education (CTE) is at new highs, up by 13% since last year.  More people are seeing the value of having current, marketable skills and the certification credentials needed for these careers.

According to the Agency for Workforce Innovation, seven of the 10 fastest growing occupations in Florida through the year 2016 will require a CTE certification (see a list of those occupations here)  Those are credentials which can be obtained in 12 - 24 months, usually at one of Hillsborough County's Hi-TEC Centers.  These post-secondary programs are tuition based; the Foundation's INVEST program helps these workers who want to get back into the job market.  These are careers that will be around for a while - and pay well!  See the article below to learn more about folks taking advantage of this program and how you can help.
Daniel's Second Chance

Daniel was working as a parts manager for a road construction company in Largo until he lost his job in October 2006.  As the economy began to sink and local unemployment began to rise, Daniel found it impossible to find work in his area of specialty.  He comes from a family with an extensive medical background, both his mother and grandmother have worked in the field, and is very familiar with the joy that comes from working to help others.  This led to his decision to enroll in the CNA program, which he completed in July 2008.  Daniel is currently completing his LPN coursework at Erwin Hi-TEC Center.

There are many residents in the Tampa Bay community who, just like Daniel, have the skills to succeed but cannot find the right opportunities in these troubled times.  You can help them get the support they need to build a secure future for themselves and their families.  Click here to learn more about the support opportunities available with our INVEST program.
Instructional Support "Superhero" of the Year

Blue presentMr. William R. Davis is a custodian at Springhead Elementary School who occasionally dresses up as "Character Ed," a superhero who teaches the students about good character and positive behavior.  For this, and many other reasons, Mr. Davis is Hillsborough County's 2009-2010 Instructional Support Employee of the Year.

Thanks to the support of Presenting Sponsor Suncoast Schools Federal Credit Union's Suncoast for Kids Foundation, Mr. Bill was honored along with three finalists and 210 site nominees at this year's awards breakfast.  This event was possible through the support of the Foundation's Excellence in Education donors, who are instrumental in all of the Foundation's recognition programs.

The Foundation extends great congratulations to all of the extraordinary instructional support personnel who were recognized.
Tampa Bay Rays Are Champions For Education

The Tampa Bay Rays invite you to tune into the Rays vs. Indians game on Sunday, May 17 and help students all over the Tampa Bay area.  During the game, the Rays will host a Broadcast Auction to support the Hillsborough and Pinellas Education Foundations.  Starting at 1:38pm you will have the chance to bid on incredible Rays packages.  Be sure to check your local listings for broadcast channels.  For more information on this exciting opportunity to support local schools, contact Mindi Zink at (813) 231 - 1937.
Foundation Helps Teacher Certification

Teachers wishing to pursue certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards must complete a comprehensive application process, and pay a $2,500 application fee.  This fee was being paid for until the economic downturn of the past year.  The Foundation is now stepping in to raise funds to assist teachers with the financial requirements of the certification process.  With the help of Superintendent MaryEllen Elia and the Suncoast Schools Federal Credit Union's Suncoast for Kids Foundation, the Superintendent's National Board Recognition Fund was created.  With your help, we can further the careers of our teachers, and deepen the impact they have on our children.  Click here to learn more about this process and what you can do to help.
Conquering Uncharted Web Territory

Blue presentThe Foundation is excited to venture further into the world wide web with the introduction of its first online auction, running in conjunction with the Apple Appeal - Starlight Safari fundraising event.  Starting April 27, you are invited to log on to the Starlight Safari online auction and place a bid on the fierce items presented in this year's silent auction.  All bids placed before the auction closes on May 7 will be recorded and brought to the Apple Appeal event on May 8, where guests will have the chance to place any final bids to win the items.  You could enjoy exciting VIP sports experiences, dine at some of Tampa's top restaurants, or getaway to fabulous vacation spots, while helping support the students, teachers and schools of Hillsborough County.  Don't miss out on this exciting opportunity, register for your place in the online auction today!

Where's The Copy Paper?

Did you know it is possible to help 10 teachers, 10 classrooms, and 300 students with just one single item?  One carton of copy paper can provide a teacher with the materials he/she needs to produce effective lessons.  It has become the top requested item by teachers who visit Teaching Tools for Hillsborough Schools, and will undoubtedly continue to be on high demand as the year continues.  Through the Carton Club you can make sure our teachers have the supplies they need for classroom success.  For more information and to join the Carton Club contact Laura Grucza at (813) 740-7651 x225.
