Note From The President
Let me share what we recently heard from Tom Santomaggio, a Senior Accountant with Pender Newkirk & Company: "I believe I speak for our group as a whole when I say that our experience volunteering for Teaching Tools afforded us insight into an organization which we previously knew little about. Objects and materials which we use in our everyday jobs and which many of us take for granted (i.e. pencils, notebooks, copier paper, etc...) are very valuable materials for teachers. As was pointed out to our group, many educational programs are underfunded, and devoted teachers use their own funds to purchase materials for their students, but are also most of the times limited to what they can purchase by their own personal budgets."
This is a very nice testimonial for the Teaching Tools for Hillsborough Schools program. But equally impressive is this was sent after PNC CPA's had 7 volunteers helping out at the store for about 5 hours during a workday. That's giving!! And it's not an isolated experience; we've had generous companies give of not only their materials and monies, but perhaps most importantly, their time. These organizations include J.P.Morgan, Outback, Hands on Tampa Bay, Bank of America, Kohl's, IBM, State Farm, Ernst and Young, and HSBC. We salute all the organizations and individuals who give of their time and talent in helping out our programs.

Scholarships
The cost of a college education seems to increase every year. And in these economic times it is extremely important that students hoping to continue their education have the chance to do so. Through January 22, 2009 all public school students had the chance to log onto the Foundation's website and participate in this year's scholarship application period.
The scholarships are provided by civic groups, alumni associations, social clubs, and business partners. Any family, individual, or organization can set up a scholarship fund. Any amount, large or small, will significantly help a student reach their dreams. For many students, the opportunity to continue their education depends entirely on the financial assistance they can receive through scholarships. For more information on how you can contribute to the Foundation's scholarship programs please contact Tami Milner at (813) 231-1948, or visit us online.

Stuff The Bus
Be a champion for our students! Take part in a Super Bowl-sized supply drive! Their big game comes more than once a year. School supplies are not just needed at the beginning of a school year, they are needed all year through. The Teaching Tools for Hillsborough Schools' Stuff the Bus supply drives help make sure all students are prepared for a better school year. Don't miss the kick off, there's still time to join the team! For a Supply Drive Packet, click here. Contact Laura Grucza at (813) 740-7651 x225 for more information. |
The Tampa Knights Choose Teaching Tools
The Foundation would like to thank the Tampa Knights Rod and Custom Club for their $1,000 contribution and supply donation to Teaching Tools. We are also pleased to announce that, by unanimous decision, the Tampa Knights have chosen our program as their choice charity for the next two years. The Knights have supported Teaching Tools through monetary and supply donations since 2004. |

Teaching Tools For Hillsborough Schools' Go Green Initiatives
The Foundation is the proud recipient of a $50,000 grant from the Board of County Commissioners for the Teaching Tools for Hillsborough Schools' Go Green initiative. The Board presented this grant to support the program's efforts towards improving the environment. In 2008, Teaching Tools for Hillsborough Schools prevented over 50 tons of reusable materials from ending up in landfills. To date, the program has diverted a total of six million pounds of waste from damaging the environment. The Go Green Initiative would not be possible without the help of local businesses who donate their recyclables to the Teaching Tools program. You too can improve our environment and provide Hillsborough County students with the tools for success. Contact Linda Beckman at (813) 740-7651 x 223 or lbeckman@educationfoundation.com for more information.

Financial and Retirment Planning 101
Employees of Hillsborough County Public Schools turned out in record numbers on January 26th for the annual Retirement and Financial Planning 101 seminar, hosted by the Foundation's Planned Giving Committee and sponsored by Wachovia Trust. The one-hour panel discussion touched on such topics as: leaving assets to charities, drafting a will, protecting retirement plan assets from lawsuits, the conditions for enrolling in DROP, and the process of starting retirement.
Setting up a planned gift upon retirement is a wonderful way to ensure the legacy you have worked so hard to build continues and thrives. There are many options to consider, including bequests or arranging beneficiaries of insurances and retirement plans. For more information on Planned Giving options with the Foundation, visit our website. |
