Spotlight On
Career & Tech

Rick Caldevilla writes:
As most students at the time, when I started at Hillsborough High School in 1979 I had every intention of attending a university so my courses were College Prep.  I worked for my uncle's ice and fuel oil business during high school.  I enjoyed working with him and decided that I would pursue a trade rather than a college education.  It was a very difficult decision, especially since all of my friends were going to college.  With full support from my parents, after high school I enrolled in the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration class at Erwin Vo Tech where I learned the basics of my trade.  After completing Erwin, I was eager to join the work force and immediately starting working for a local air conditioning company where I was trained to be an Air Conditioning Service Technician.  After seven years of working for Castellano Air Conditioning, I decided it was time to start my own company.  I've been in business for 18 years and my company is one of the leading air conditioning service and replacement companies in Tampa.  While I would never discourage anyone from attending a university, you have to keep in mind that universities are not for everyone, I was lucky enough that I had my parents support when I decided to go to trade school.

Note From The President

Our community is fortunate to have hundreds of businesses and community organizations who partner with local schools to help ensure a quality education for our students.  At the Hillsborough Education Foundation, we take time out each year to highlight many of the memorable stories at our Business Partnership Awards.  We had a very nice event at the Lions Eye Institute made possible by the generosity of our sponsors.  Please check out the list of who made this possible.  Special thanks to Bright House Networks for their continued support as the Presenting Sponsor of this event. Bright House not only sponsors our Business Partnership program, but the Foundation's "Bright House Spotlight on Education" series which has introduced hundreds of community members on how they can get involved in education; all are future business partners.

Career & College FEST

 Barbara's Birthday
Over 2,500 attendees enjoyed the displays.

The 2nd Annual Career & College FESTS held at Jefferson and Bloomingdale High Schools on October 8th and 9th were a huge success.  Over 2,500 students and parents had the opportunity to meet with business, industry, college and technical center representatives to learn more about the career pathways and the postsecondary options that are available!  That's a lot of community members interested in learning more about Career & Technical Education.  Breakout sessions were held on financial aid and articulation to postsecondary institutions. We want to thank our generous sponsors, the business industry, school and college exhibitors who participated and the Career & Technical Education Committee.  They provided great information to students and parents about the numerous opportunities available to students while in high school and after graduation.

Special thanks to our Platinum Sponsors, Citi and TECO, as well as the Tampa Tribune - News In Education for their help in getting the word out.  To become involved with this program, contact Tami Milner at (813) 231-1924.
