Note From The President

The week of May 5th celebrated National Teacher Appreciation Week, a time to honor dedicated educators who contribute to the success of their schools and students. Our partnership with the local community provides us the opportunity to extend teacher appreciation throughout the year, by "Serving Teachers" through a variety of recognition and support programs.

Over the past 20 years we've helped teacher's visions become reality through our Classroom Grants programs, celebrated outstanding educational achievement through a variety of recognition programs such as Teacher of the Year, and developed a variety of programs centered on Teacher Recruitment and Retention, including scholarships and professional development. Most recently we've helped provide teachers with needed supplies to use and share with students in the classroom through our Teaching Tools for Hillsborough Schools program.

Teachers who visited Teaching Tools for Hillsborough Schools during National Teacher Appreciation week not only walked away with their typical "grab bag" of $250+ worth of free school supplies, but were greeted with special gift bags and prize drawings.  This year alone, more than 5,000 teacher shopping visits armed teachers with more than $1.6 Million worth of free supplies!  That's a lot of appreciation and lot of free supplies!

We're thankful to the generous community that makes this possible. We realize that teachers are critical to student success in our communities' schools.  We love showing our appreciation for what they do to help our students succeed!
Children's Board Sponsorship Makes It Possible!

Barbara's BirthdayServing the students, teachers and schools of Hillsborough County encompasses a variety of skill sets needed by our Foundation staff.  From program management to development efforts, the staff is always striving to be the best.

Thanks to the generous sponsorship and funds from the Children's Board of Hillsborough County, the Foundation's staff is able to receive specialized training and learn valuable skills to successfully execute the Foundation's mission.  This year's "FOCUS" "Achieving Your Highest Priorities", program by FranklinCovey, trained staff members to identify and prioritize their daily on-going efforts, increasing efficiency and the ability to better serve our local community.

The Children's Board sponsorship also provides the necessary means for our development team to attend the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Conference. The sponsorship allows team member participation while sharing ideas, philosophy, knowledge and expertise among their peers. Face-to-face interactions help ensure our team has the latest information available to secure necessary funding to support the Foundation's ongoing efforts.

These combined efforts will allow us to properly serve more students in Hillsborough County.

Recruit, Train And Retain New Teachers

The best way to help students achieve academic success is by ensuring that our schools have fully qualified and staffed faculties. In order to maintain the high level of quality education provided to the students in our community, Hillsborough County Public Schools must attract and recruit capable instructors each year. This year the Hillsborough Education Foundation and Hillsborough County Public Schools will be welcoming approximately 800 new teachers for the 2008-2009 school year! Two programs, Teacher Interview Days and New Teacher Orientation, will be held this summer to recruit, train and retain new teachers in Hillsborough County Public Schools.

Teacher Interview Days will be held on June 11 & 12, 2008 at Jefferson High School.  New Teacher Orientation will be held July 23-25, 2008 at Wharton High School.  These events will present a unique opportunity for your company to be recognized as supporting the students, teachers and schools of Hillsborough County.

Please contact Mindi Zink at (813) 231-1952 for further information.

The Apple Appeal- "The Private Tour", featured a fun-filled evening of live music, libations and heavy hors d'oeuvres at the exclusive state-of-the-art facility, One Buccaneer Place, Friday, May 16th. Honorary Chairman Lee Roy Selmon and emcee Gayle Sierens welcomed guests to participate in a behind the scenes tour of the 2002 World Champion Buccaneer headquarters while bidding on a wide variety of specialty items during the Silent Auction.

We would like to thank Raymond James & Associates, Inc. for sponsoring this event, as well as our other contributors including Dimension Printing, Inc., JPMorgan Chase, Pepin Distributing Company, Bryn-Alan Studios, Inc. and a litany of auction donors and guests!  Proceeds benefited the Hillsborough Education Foundation, now celebrating 20 years of serving the students, teachers and schools of Hillsborough County.

Finally, all of this would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of our Apple Appeal Committee.  Thank you for everything you do!

Record Crowd Recognizes Educational Achievement, Thanks To The Tampa Bay Rays!

The Hillsborough Education Foundation and Hillsborough County Public Schools hit a "Home Run" for our community when over 6,800 Hillsborough County Public School Rays' fans attended "Spirit Night" showcasing educational excellence in Hillsborough County. Fans were treated to another win by the Rays as they defeated the Los Angeles Angels, May 10th at Tropicana Field.

During the pre-game festivities nominees for Teacher of the Year, Ida S. Baker Diversity Educator of the Year and Instructional Support Employee of the Year took the field and manned the bases, allowing attendees an opportunity to honor their outstanding achievements. The winners accompanied by the program sponsors were then recognized during an on-field award ceremony. A special thank you to our Teacher of the Year and Ida S. Baker Diversity Educator of the Year Founding Sponsors; Suncoast Schools Federal Credit Union, Caspers Company McDonald's Restaurants, and Horus Construction Services, Inc.

The fun-filled evening would not have been possible without the Tampa Bay Rays' ongoing commitment to education and the local community. We look forward to next year's event and another opportunity to showcase educational spirit in Tampa.
  Go Rays!
