Note From The President

We recently participated in the regional meeting of the Consortium of Florida Education Foundations hosted at the Pinellas Education Foundation's Stavros Center and sponsored by TECO Energy and Progress Energy.  Sen. Don Gaetz, the keynote speaker, shared not only some interesting experiences, but also challenges facing the business community getting involved in public education.  Sen. Gaetz is the first non-educator to be elected superintendent of the Okaloosa County Schools and has incorporated business practices into the schools, with an emphasis on career education throughout the high schools.

Sen. Gaetz's approach begins with the premise that the students are customers of the schools.  Changes he implemented which helped raise Okaloosa to consecutive "A" district ratings (with 32 of 34 schools receiving an "A") included:

ü     Adding relevancy to curricula at the schools by incorporating career training throughout the high schools; using relevant programs and curricula to reduce drop-out rates

ü     Engaged businesses so that programs are designed to address workforce needs

ü     Ended social promotion of students - and allocate resources (money & time) to assist each student to become successful

ü     Decentralized services and put more emphasis on local budget control and accountability

These changes did present some challenges, but they show a theme of community and business engagement, as well as increased local responsibility and accountability.  Sen. Gaetz did acknowledge there was resistance when he started, however he felt that the results of these changes helped to win over supporters.  Read more in the follow up newspaper article.

Grant Programs Impact Showcased

The Hillsborough Education Foundation Grants committee held a luncheon January 30th at the Rampello Downtown Partnership School to provide an opportunity to learn first hand the impact community partnerships and grants have on the students, teachers and schools of Hillsborough County.

Lenea Martel, a science teacher, spoke about the experiences she has had with the Hillsborough Education Foundation grants program at a number of schools, including the Downtown Partnership School.  Martel provided attendees with examples of materials and learning aids constructed with grant support and praised their effectiveness in enhancing her students learning experience.  Barbara Fillhart, principal of Sligh Middle School, discussed her community partnership established with JPMorgan Chase and how recent Foundation grants benefit her technology programs.

To learn more about the opportunity to become involved with the Hillsborough Education Foundation Grants contact Tony Holbrook, Associate Director of Development, at (813) 231-1937.

Most Successful Supply Drive Of The Year

An on-going effort of the Hillsborough Education Foundation is to work with the community to maintain enough educational resources at the Teaching Tools for Hillsborough Schools Supply Store.  This is accomplished through community lead supply drives to get needed school supplies.  This month, Suncoast Schools Federal Credit Union led the class hosting an employee supply drive that resulted in the most successful supply drive of the year!

Suncoast School Federal Credit Union employees certainly understand that in order to be successful in school, students need the basic items required in the classroom.  They donated reams of copy paper, that when stacked, would reach 14 stories high and contributed a whopping 28,000 pencils!  Suncoast for Kids Foundation then matched their employee's generosity with a $1,000 contribution.

Thank You, Suncoast Schools Federal Credit Union and Suncoast for Kids Foundation!  It's because of the giving spirit demonstrated by Tampa Bay businesses like you that the Hillsborough Education Foundation's Teaching Tools for Hillsborough Schools program exists.  For more information on how to start your own supply drive or to make a donation, call (813) 740-7651.

Teacher Of The Year

Congratulations to Ms. Debby Dowell from Bartels Middle School, Hillsborough County's "Teacher of the Year".  Ms. Dowell received the news from Superintendent MaryEllen Elia during a ceremony honoring 210 nominees and 12 finalists during a wonderful dinner held February 28th, at the Tampa Convention Center.

The event, emceed by Gayle Sierens, anchor of WFLA NewsChannel 8, was highlighted by video greetings from U.S. Soldiers.  The soldiers discussed lessons they've learned from their favorite teachers and introduced the nominees.  We would like to thank CENTCOM at MacDill Air Force Base and Gen. Dan Schultz for making this possible.

We would also like to give a big "Thank You" to all the sponsors that made this night possible with a special thanks to Caspers Company McDonald's Restaurants, the program's Founding Sponsor, and Suncoast Schools Federal Credit Union, the Presenting Sponsor.

As the 2008-2009 Teacher of the Year, Ms. Dowell received deserved recognition and many special prizes.  For a complete list of prizes click here.

Ms. Dowell wasn't the only winner.  Each nominee and finalist walked away with gifts including satchels full of prizes, cash awards and tickets to many local entertainment venues.  A random drawing was held for the nominees and the winner, Penny Varnum from Jackson Elementary, received a four day, three night vacation package.

Scholarship Apps Are In...We Need Your Help

This year's pool of scholarship applications available through the Foundation has been received and now the real fun begins. We are reaching out to the local community to help us select the most worthy recipients.  Volunteer judges will review the many applications received and help select this year's winners.  Applications include essays from the students that share from their heart why they deserve a scholarship.  Please consider taking some time out of your day to help us with this rewarding task.

We will be reviewing applications throughout the day on Wednesday, March 12th from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. at Teaching Tools for Hillsborough Schools, 3719 Corporex Park Drive in Tampa.  For directions to Teaching Tools please click here.  Reply to Debbie Wilson at (813) 231-1901 if you are able to attend!

A Big Day At The Fair

The Florida State Fair also made an award of $6,000 for the Teaching Tools for Hillsborough Schools program to provide basic school supplies for needy students in schools served by this program.  As importantly, they donated more than 15,000 pencils to be distributed through the Supply Store.
