| Note from the President
January is National Mentoring Month. We want to take this opportunity to thank all of the dedicated men and women who mentor students in our Take Stock in Children scholarship program. While we ask that mentors commit for a minimum of one year working with a student, many of our mentors have been with their students for many years and tell us they plan to stay with their student until he or she graduates. What commitment!
Our mentors understand the importance of being someone their student can depend on and recognize that their visit might be the highlight in that student's week. Our mentors realize that even with a scholarship, their students' success will depend on the confidence and increased self-esteem they will gain from having someone in their corner to cheer them on.
We want to take this opportunity to let each of our mentors know their dedication and commitment is appreciated during National Mentoring Month and all year long.
"There is no higher religion than human service. To work for the common good is the greatest creed." - Albert Schweitzer |

Letter from a Mentor
"Being a mentor means listening first-listening to the concerns, thoughts, ideas, and dreams of our students. Mentoring means sharing-sharing both failures and successes in life while exchanging the common experiences of learning how to overcome any challenge. Mentoring means tutoring-helping and encouraging our students while building their confidence in academics. Finally, being a mentor means knowing-knowing that time spent listening, sharing, tutoring, and encouraging returns to you a much greater reward of knowing you've made a positive difference in the life of a student."

Visibility Helps Students, Teachers and Schools Get Needed Support
Our ongoing efforts to educate our future leaders begins with educating the community on our school districts' ever growing needs, and the various programs, scholarships, grants, and support available through the Hillsborough Education Foundation. This would not be possible without the ongoing support of our local media partners.
From ads showcasing our generous event sponsors, to sharing messages, to helping generate needed school supplies for our students...we know we can count on them. Our partners' generosity is not limited to just donating valuable ad space to promote our programs and events, but they're also strong financial supporters. Thanks for all you do to spread the word!

Many of our best teachers come right out of our school system
Michele Schwartz, Teacher, Palm River Elementary School (CitiScholar recipient)
"I was already working as an administrative assistant in the school system while trying to complete my degree, only needing a few more credits, so I took a class that would help me get there, Intro to Education. Little did I know, that class would change my life; I was required to attend an elementary classroom as an observer, I was there for about 10 minutes and realized this is where I had to be," says Michele.
Michele Schwartz is a graduate of the district's own Brandon High, a CitiScholar recipient, Teacher of the Year for 2008 at Palm River Elementary and represents one of Tampa's outstanding citizens. Her dedication and desire to pursue her passion of teaching hopefully will be an inspiration for others who have the same desire but not the means to achieve it.
The Hillsborough Education Foundation has developed a scholarship program for employees of the school district in conjunction with such partners as Citi. The CitiScholars scholarship program provides educational opportunities for promising instructional support personnel, which includes para-professionals, aides, assistant teachers, clerical, technical staff, etc. This program serves as a resource to bring this current group of employees into the teaching force, which will aid in the reduction of the teacher shortage in Hillsborough County Public Schools. | |
