Four Ways to Honor Your Mentor

1. Contact your mentor directly to express your appreciation;

"Invest in the Future: Mentor a Child" is the theme for National Mentoring Month in January 2012. During the month, the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence is joining with mentoring organizations, schools, businesses and media across the state to encourage citizens to mentor a child in their community.

Gov. Mary Fallin is supporting the effort by declaring January as Mentoring Month in Oklahoma. Through its David and Molly Boren Mentoring Initiative, the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence
provides a statewide directory of mentoring programs for prospective volunteers or program participants. Prospective volunteers can log on to the website or call (405) 236-0006 to learn about mentoring opportunities in their communities.
Pay Tribute to Your Mentor

During National Mentoring Month in January, the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence invites you to honor your mentor by posting a tribute on our website.

Your mentor might be a teacher, coach, neighbor, friend or boss - someone who helped you become who you are today. You can share a memory of your mentor, a lesson he or she has taught you, or just say "Thanks" for the impact your mentor has had on your life. Your tribute will be of value to others who visit our website and will demonstrate the important role that mentors play in our lives.

What Mentoring Looks Like at My School
by Cindi Hemm, Eugene Field Elementary School, Tulsa

I invite you to visit our school any Thursday or Friday at lunch time. You will see many adults with children in our halls. They are having lunch, reading, playing games, talking and, in general, having fun! These dedicated adults are "mentors" to 230 of our students. Our halls are packed with these volunteers who come in all shapes, sizes, ethnicities and religions each and every week of the school year. I truly don't know who benefits more, the adult or the child?

The Whiz Kids program is blessed to partner with nearly 60 churches in the greater metro area to provide individual mentors for hundreds of Oklahoma City's most at-risk elementary students.
