COACHES
CORNER

This year marks head coach Dan Payne's third year of tutelage.  During the past two years the teams has climbed rapidly through the national rankings and finished ranked #4 at the end of the 2008 season.

With 12 of 15 starters coming back from last years squad We asked Dan to comment on the teams goals.  Dan stated "that with each season of success the expectations from the team becomes greater.  All the team members are aware of this and expect greater accomplishments this year.  Most of this years team lived in San Diego over the summer to get a head start on the season.  Mentally and physically this team will be superior to where we have come from over the last two years and as such should challenge to surpass our stated goals."

The Foundation thanks Dan and the rest of the Aztec Coaching staff including Jim Wilson, Dave DiSorbo, Miguel Bertha, Jess Lawton and Matt Sherman for their efforts.

Greetings!

The season preparation kicked off this week with hopes high for another great season.  The team began practice with over 45 returning players and 35 new recruits in attendance.  The players will compete for roster spots on three separate teams, in two separate divisions.  Two of the teams will compete in the newly revamped Southern California Division 1 league while a third and fourth team will play in Division 2 as our younger development squad.

50 Year Aztec Rugby Celebration Gala

Excitement is continuing to build for what is anticipated to be the largest attended Alumni weekend ever.  The fall of 2008 marks the 50th year of Aztec Rugby!  During those years Aztec Rugby has dominated the Southern California scene and placed it's mark on the Pacific Coast and USA Teams.

To honor this milestone the Aztec Rugby Foundation is hosting the Aztec Rugby 50 Year Celebration Gala in combination with the annual alumni game.    All alumni, coaches, trainers, parents, supporters and team members are welcome to come.

The event is scheduled for Thursday evening October 23rd, and will take place at the Bahia hotel in Mission Bay from 6:30 - 10:00.  The package and price for the gala includes a cocktail reception, dinner and entertainment.  The price for the gala is $100.00 with $35.00 estimated to go as a tax deduction.

Foundation Elects New Directors

On behalf of the board of directors of the Aztec Rugby Foundation we are pleased to announce that David Viani and JC Bautista have been appointed as new directors.

We would also like to announce that Dwayne Parker and Chris Prell have been re-appointed as Board members.

Because there were more vacancies than available candidates for this years board the Foundation elected to by-pass the expense and delay of a general election and proceed under section 3.8 of our by-laws and appoint the new members and re-appoint Dwayne and Chris.

With the latest appointments the total number of our Board now stands at eight, one shy of our maximum allowed under our current by-laws.  If you are interested in becoming a Board member please contact us at:

We would like to thank the newest Board members for their willingness to serve and for their commitment to Aztec Rugby.  We look forward to their contributions in the months ahead.

Aztec Makes IRB 7's Pool:

The International Rugby Board 7's tournaments are already set to begin.  Based on last years success the USA team has been invited to be a core, (full time status),  participant at all 8 worldwide tournaments this year.

In preparation of the first qualifying tournment of the season in October the USA team gathered a 40 man pool of players at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, on Sepemter 11th - 14th.  Coming off an impressive season of 7's and his selection to the Southern Calfifornia All Stars Aztec wing/fullback, Alex Ross was once again selected to particpate at the camp.  Along with Alex, Aztec head coach Dan Payne and new backs coach Matt Sherman assisted in the camp.

As of press time the squad for this years team has not been announced just yet.  We do believe though the experience that Alex is picking up will pay big dividends for the Aztec's when he laces up the boots for the new season.

The Foundation wishes Alex good luck!!  Way to go!!

The IRB 7's will come to the USA on Feb 14th & 15th and will once again be staged at Petco Park.

Aztec Coach Passes

On a sad note, the Foundation would like to pass on our condolences to the family and friends of former head coach Robbie Chapman.

After numerous years with Ombac as a player, Robbie took over the reins as head coach for the Aztec's from 1990-1993.  He brought an aggressive style of play to the team consistent with his South African upbringing. After coaching the Aztec's Robbie returned to his homeland South Africa.

Robbie passed away earlier this month.
