COACHES
CORNER

This June head coach Dan Payne held the first ever Aztec Rugby Youth Camp.

We asked Dan to comment on the success of the camp.  Dan stated "that it was truly a joy to witness the future stars of  American Rugby participant in this camp.  Teaching at this level was inspiring for all!  The kids and coaches were so proud of their skill advancements over the three days. We hope this pays dividends for them individually and for the Aztec team for years to come."

The participants all received  Aztec Rugby Dry Fit work out gear to take home and visualize about attending SDSU in the years to come.

The Foundation thanks Dan, Todd Clever, Dave Williams and the Aztec coaching staff for their efforts.

Nice job guys!!

Greetings!

Summer normally brings a lull to major rugby competitions. This year however there has been plenty of rugby activity occurring around the nation.  The USA Team has been in full force with the Churchill Cup held in Chicago and the North American 4 competitions.  Your Aztec All Stars have also been very busy competing in the Intercollegiate All Star games and the Aztec Team in the rugby 7's season.

In this update on the team and The Aztec Rugby Foundation you will find information on:
  • Legacy 100 & Foundation Membership Growth

Thank You

This month we are proud to announce that we have three new financial donors that have chosen to support the cause in building the Aztec Rugby Foundation endowment.  Two of our new financial donors have also stepped forward to provide support in either helping out the Foundation or in becoming a director.

This month's financial contributors are:

David Viani
Sean Langley
Carlos VanZanten

David has decided to run for an open directorship and Sean has pledged to help out where ever necessary on upcoming projects.

The Foundation thanks you for your support.  It is alumni like yourself that will help Aztec Rugby achieve it's lofty goals.

Way to go David, Sean & Carlos!!

50 Year Team Reunion

Alumni be sure to save the date for this year's Alumni weekend.  The fall of 2008 marks the 50th year of Aztec Rugby!  During those years Aztec Rugby has dominated the Southern California scene and placed it's mark on the Pacific Coast and USA Teams.

To honor this milestone the Aztec Rugby Foundation is planning a 50 Year team celebration gala in combination with the annual alumni game.  The date for this event is scheduled for Thursday evening October 23rd.

Following the gala night, the students will host their annual golf tournament on Friday.  On Saturday the annual alumni match will kick off with the students having revived their winning ways over the last two years.

Alumni get this weekend on your calendar now and get ready to take part in this monumental occasion.  Additional details will follow as the committee finalizes the site selection and full venue.

All American Selections and New Zealand Tour

Following the National Guard Collegiate All - American Championships on June 13-14, USA Rugby announced the 2008 All American selections.  The Aztecs were well positioned in the tournament with a total of 12 team members selected to play for Southern California.

Overall 41 All Americans were selected with the Aztec's receiving two outright selections and three honorable mentions.  One of the All American's also made the traveling squad which will travel to New Zealand this month for a three match series.

Congratulations go to:

All Americans, eight man Joe Fontana & flyhalf Duncan Kelm.

Honorable mentions All American accolades go to:

Flanker Ryan Howe, Prop David Buboltz & Fullback Alex Lichtig.

Joe was selected to the traveling squad which left for New Zealand on July 14.  Lastly, Duncan Kelm also was selected for the USA Under 20 side.

Southern California League Restructures

The Southern California League will take on a new look next year.  It has been announced that a six team Premier League will be formed instead of the current ten team league.  The goal of the new league is to improve the overall level of competition so that at next year's Nationals the division will be well represented.  Under the initial proposal each team would play a home and away series against each other.

The teams in the new Division will include:

San Diego State
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo
UCSB
UCLA
University of Arizona

The last spot up for contention will be decided between USD, Long Beach State and Arizona State.  From a rivalry, cost and scheduling standpoint we hope it will be USD as the last member of the league.

Teams moving down to help form a new 8 team Division II league include Claremont & UCSD.  Both of which are coming off rebuilding seasons this year.

The Division III league will now be comprised of 10 teams with SDSU also having a team in this division.

Summer 7's

This year the team has had an unprecedented number of players that have stayed in San Diego to work on their skills and compete in Summer 7's events.  No fewer than 30 Aztec's have been participating in practices and in competitions.

The hard work has been paying off as the team competed in the King's division, (Open mens), of the Las Vegas 7's tournament on June 21st.  Under blistering heat that normally categorizes this tournament the team made it all the way to the final before losing a tough match 33-14.

On June 28, the team competed in the Oasis 7's tournament in San Diego facing some exuberant competition.  The Aztec's, once again playing in the open bracket, met the challenge advancing to the final against Santa Monica.  This time though they were not to be denied.  After sending the game into overtime the Aztec's recovered the ball and winger Mike Hicks was sent streaked for the winning try.

After two tournaments the Aztec's record stands at 8-1.

Next up for the team are tournaments in Long Beach and possibly Santa Monica.
Dan Payne Summer Camp

Head Coach, and former World Cup USA 8 man Dan Payne held his first ever Aztec Youth summer skills development camp on June 25 - 27th.  The camp was broken down into 2 groups for 5th - 7th grades and 8th grade through seniors.  The current SDSU coaching staff  assisted in the camp along with current USA team members Todd Clever and USA Rugby National Team, Strength and Conditioning Coach, Dave Williams.

There were a total of 50 kids who made it to this event from Northern and Southern California.   The event was well received by the participants and parents and will certainly grow in stature for next year.

This aims to be another key recruiting component for a steady stream of future Aztec rugby players.   Three of the attendees are already set to attend SDSU.

Support the Cause

Fellow Aztec supporters in order to maintain a high level of success we need your help.  In previous emails the Foundation has announced fund raising activities toward achieving a financial base and building an endowment for years to come.

Many of our Alumni have answered the call by stepping forward and contributing in some fashion or by signing up for the Legacy 100.  As previously announced, this program is the Foundation's attempt to build a financial base of 100 alumni each with a $1000.00 contribution.  To date we have collected over $17k towards our initial goal to reach $100k.

The Foundation is also compiling a sponsorship package and looking for corporate advertising to improve our financial standing.  But truly efforts to grow the foundation must come from within.  In order to continue the proud tradition and success of the program your financial help is needed.  Please join your peers in helping fund the Foundation for future generations of Aztec Rugby Champions.
