COACHES
CORNER

Head coach Dan Payne returns to lead the Aztecs on the heels of his impressive debut against South Africa in the Rugby World Cup.

Coach Payne was extremely happy with the effort that the team put in to win the SCRFU crown.

Heading to the playoffs with the highest National Ranking in years
we asked Dan how he felt about the team's chances in the Sweet 16's.

Coach Payne, stated "that we have worked very hard to get to this level.  However with a possible #12 ranked team and a #2 ranked team on the horizon we can't let up  now.  The team will have a much deserved week off for spring break after this victory.  From there we will regroup  and concentrate on our play timing, counter attack, fitness and pattern.  The team made it to the Sweet 16's last year and their quest for greater heights is within them."

The Foundation thank's Dan & and the rest of the coaching staff for their efforts.

Nice effort and as the team say's let's keep the train a rolling - Choo Choo!!

Greetings!

The Aztec rugby team captured the Southern California Rugby Football Union crown with a drubbing of Cal State Long Beach 66-0.

The team finished the league season at 9-0 and advances to the round of Sweet 16 of the National Championships.   The location for this year's Sweet 16 playoffs are Albuquerque, NM on April 18th & 19th.  The four winners of each bracket will then advance to the Final Four on May 2nd & 3rd at Stanford.

The teams record, margin of victory and a shocking loss by Navy has caused a big movement in the National Rankings with the Aztec's moving up to #3. (See below for the game summary and the top 25 listing ).

Thank You

Before we review the latest game action summary though we first start off with our special segment recognizing our latest financial contributor to the Aztec Rugby Foundation.

This week we are proud to announce that 1987 & 1988 superstar at #8, Warren Stanley, has continued his commitment and support to Aztec Rugby by joining the Legacy 100 with a $1000.00 donation.

Warren was a standout at #8 during the 1987 National Championship and Pacific Coast Playoffs, where against Cal, he capped off the finishing touches of one of the greatest trys in Aztec Rugby history.  Warren shares in our vision of growing the Foundation and would like to see more alumni names appear as contributors.

The Foundation thanks Warren for his support.  It is alumni like yourself that will continue to help the Aztec Rugby achieve it's lofty goals.  Specifically, League Champion, (Completed), Sweet Sixteen, (Completed),  Elite 8, Final Four & National Champions.   The goals include our D2 squad

Way to go Warren!!!

Aztec's Move Up In National Ranking's to #3

The Aztec's had initially climbed to #4 after capturing the Southern California Crown but a shocking loss by Navy to Penn State caused them to vacate the 3rd spot with the Aztec's being the benefactor.  This will probably be the final movements in the rankings in the top 5 since only a handful of playoff games remain however most of those are in the lower brackets.

There will be plenty of movement in the lower 20 as many of the teams take part in their final league games and playoff games this weekend.

Hear are the current top 25 rankings from American Rugby News.  The one loss they list for us represents a preseason game.  As an FYI, The second column represents the previous ranking.

Based on the playoff brackets at the USAR Championships the Aztec squad will face off against #12 ranked Arkansas State in the first round.  If successful in the first round it appears likely that the Aztec's would face off against #2 BYU in the Elite 8.

Aztec's Roll on Cal State Long Beach

On a beautiful Southern California day with temperatures in the high 70's the Aztec's team stepped on to the pitch for a chance to complete their perfect season.  The crowd for the day was larger on the Aztec side of the field versus the hometown Long Beach as numerous family, friends and alumni gathered to witness the team strive for a perfect ending to league play.

Long Beach was up for the task initially as the first 20 minutes gave the Aztec's numerous possessions however held them out of the goal line.  After that point the cracks in the armor of Long Beach became apparent and the Aztec's deep three speed began to shine.   Flyhalf Duncan Kelm was the first to score as he picked up an inside pass from a flying Chris Bredensen at wing.  It appeared that 1st score was all it took for Long Beach to wilt and from there on out a track meet broke out where a rugby game was.

Endless recycled ball left the tired Long Beach State side out of position and unable to fill the gaps.  Alex Main, Duncan Kelm, Joe Fontana and Mike Hicks all scored twice in capping off the perfect end to a perfect league season.  Please click on the link below to obtain the details as printed by American Rugby News.

Nice job guys, your work and commitment to the program shined on this special day.

For those alumni from the 80's and early 90's when the rivalry between the two State programs was at it's peak you will be happy to know that former Long Beach coach Dale Toohey made it to the game and after game social.  He was of course left bitter yet again, after another stinging loss to San Diego State.

Support the Cause

Fellow Aztec's now is the time to support your team.  The travel expenses for the playoffs will total  north of $10k for flights, hotels, vans and meals.  These equates to almost $500 per player.

The team has done their work and put forth a product that we can all be proud of.   Between Division 1 1st team, Division 1 2nd team and the D2 team the squad finished league play with 18 wins against just 6 losses.  Now it is up to us as alumni to come forward and endorse the product.  Whether it sponsoring a dinner, joining the Legacy 100 or joining the Foundation all contributions will help support the cause.  Don't worry about your commitment level EVERY bit will help.  Especially, if the team is successful in reaching the final four.

Let's show the team our appreciation for their hard work and commit to endorsing the product today.  Contributions in any amount can be mailed to:
