COACHES
CORNER

Head coach Dan Payne returns to lead the Aztecs on the heels of his impressive debut against South Africa in the Rugby World Cup.

Coach Payne is extremely happy with the effort that has been put in to position the team to win the SCRFU crown.  With one game to go we asked Dan how he felt about his chances to capture this elusive title.

Coach Payne, stated "that we have worked too hard to get to  where we are at and not have any setbacks.  The kids are one win away from a perfect season and that is something they will take with them for the rest of their lives.

We will focus hard over this weeks practice, stressing,
fundamentals, our pattern and fitness.  We can't let Long Beach even think about becoming a spoiler. The team will be ready."

The Foundation thank's Dan & and the rest of the coaching staff for their efforts.

Nice effort and let's get to the playoffs as a #1 seed!

Aztec's Remain Undefeated

In a hard fought battle the Aztec's proved to be too much for an up and coming UCLA squad.  The team faced their worst adversity of the season and overcame a first half that could best be described as testing for all.

With a stiff breeze at their backs it was hoped that the team could play territorial rugby by consistently pinning UCLA back into their half.  Unfortunately, faced with a consistent series of miscues the Aztec side could not seem to get anything moving in their direction.  Instead UCLA was quick to pounce on to the Aztec handling errors and scored first with a nice try under the posts for a 7-0 lead.

With 10 minutes to go in the half the Aztec's capitalized on an ill timed handling error as the ball reached the far wing.  Alex Ross who was storming up in defense found himself on the receiving side of this an errant knock on and raced 55 meters to tie the game at 7-7.  UCLA refused to fold though and regrouped to put together another nice series of possessions leading up to another try in the corner.  With only a few seconds remaining a penalty kick that was rewarded by the touch judges was overruled by the referee leaving the Aztec's with their first deficit of the season at half time 12-7.

Stressing game pattern and intensity Coach Payne regrouped the side at the half time break urging them to play our pattern.  Unfortunately, the second half meant that the Aztec squad would have to come from behind into the building breeze.  To make matters worse UCLA struck first raising the margin to 19-7 with 30 minutes to go.

From that point on though it was all Aztec's.  Sticking to their pattern of strong forward movement and tieing up defenders the Aztec's were able to develop gaps in the defense of UCLA that the loose forwards and backs took extreme advantage of.  Four trys were rolled in after the first ten minutes to bring the final score to 32-19.

UCLA is a big physical team that gave it their all.  Once the Aztec team took the lead though they were all in the end zone with their heads down knowing the inevitable.  Defense and consistency to the pattern described the play in the second half and the Aztec's walked away with a hard fought victory.

Superior back play by Alex Ross and Alex Lichtig and star performances by forwards Ryan Howe and Joe Fontana should be commended on the day.

Remaining Schedule

The last game of the year is scheduled for this Saturday March 22nd against a resurgent Cal State Long Beach team.  Currently the 49ers are tied for fifth in the league with 3 wins against 5 losses.  Game time for this final league match is scheduled for 12:00 at Long Beach State's home field.

Directions to the field can be found by utilizing the link below.

A win secures the Aztec's a first seed in the Sweet 16 National Playoffs.  It should be a very exciting game with so much on the line for this Aztec squad.

Come on out and show your support!!!

D2 Team Faces Possible Playoff Berth

The Division 2 squad faced off against UC Riverside in their final league match of the season.  This was a grudge match for the young Aztec side as UCR got the better of them in a preseason friendly match 12-7.

This time though the Aztec's stepped up their game and ran away for a 35-7 victory to finish off the season.

The record for the inaugural season was 3-3 in the Southern Division of D2.  This is quite impressive as the team fields 90% 1st year players and 0 seniors while they play teams with 3 & 4 years of experience.

The team record had then in third place in the league and out of the playoffs.  Fortunately, though SCRFU has awarded the Aztec's another win due to ineligible players taking part in a win by USC earlier in the season.  USC is appealing the forfeited game but if unsuccessful the team will move to 4-2 and be in the playoffs as the number 2 team from the South.  The ruling should be out by the end of next week.

If a playoff berth is granted the D2 team would then play in a four team playoff.  The top 2 teams from the South would face off against the top 2 teams of the North with the winner awarded the SCRFU D2 Crown.

Keep training guys and congratulations on a great season.   We are all looking forward to the potential of having two teams in the playoffs.

Support the Cause

Fellow Aztec supporters in order to maintain this level of success we need your help.  In previous emails the Foundation has announced fund raising activities toward achieving a financial base and building an endowment for years to come.

Many of our Alumni have answered the call by stepping forward and contributing in some fashion or by signing up for the Legacy 100.  As previously announced, this program is the Foundation's attempt to build a financial base of 100 alumni each with a $1000.00 contribution.  To date we have collected over $13k in donations in our initial goal to reach $100k.

The Foundation is also compiling a sponsorship package and looking for corporate advertising to improve our financial standing.  But truly efforts to grow the foundation must come from within.  In order to continue the proud tradition and success of the program your financial help is needed.  Please join your peers in helping fund the Foundation for future generations of Aztec Rugby Champions.
