COACHES
CORNER
|
Head coach Dan Payne returns to lead the Aztecs on the heels of his impressive debut against South Africa in the Rugby World Cup.
Coach Payne put the team through a week of two a days practice to start the year.
Asked on the status of this year's team Coach Payne, stated "that as a coaching staff we asked more from the kids then they have ever given. They in turn have rewarded us with their commitment and enthusiasm towards improving.
On Wednesday of the 2 day a week they were to begin their 10th workout and they were all smiling. We knew at that time they were special kids and ready for a big year."

Aztec Rugby Foundation Receives IRS Nonprofit Status
On December 11, 2007 the Internal Revenue Service determined that based on the Foundation's Mission Statement and Bylaws that the Foundation is exempt from Federal Income Tax under section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The IRS has further determined that our organization status will be a public charity under the code.
This was a critical milestone in the development of the Foundation and our thanks go out to our secretary Chris Morris. Chris worked through a series of what seemed like endless paperwork and delays to achieve this determination. Nice job Chris!
In a nutshell, what this designation means to you is:
ALL CONTRIBUTIONS MADE TO THE FOUNDATION ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE!
If you were worried about contributing before due to our pending tax status it is our hope now that you rejuvenate your commitment to Aztec Rugby and make a donation.

| Aztec Rugby Foundation Launches "Legacy 100" Campaign
In conjunction with Alumni Day 2007 the Aztec Rugby Foundation launched it's primary fund raising campaign for 2008, the Legacy 100. The announcement of the Legacy 100 is an effort to immediately jump start our financial base. The Foundation is searching for 100 proud alumni to step forward and contribute $1000.00 each by the end of our fiscal year June 30, 2008.
If we are successful our goal of establishing a base financial structure of $100k will be achieved. This base will be utilized to maintain a self-sustaining financial core for the SDSU Rugby Program. To put this in perspective this is an initial effort to get moving. It has been stated that Cal - Berkeley's foundation financial base is in the neighborhood of $42 million!!
Fellow Aztec alumni and supporters we ask that you review what Aztec Rugby has meant to you. In my daily life rugby has contributed to so many memories that I could not imagine my life without it. Whether it is fond memories of games, trys scored, friendships made, great coaches or travelling to new places, Aztec Rugby has impacted all of us in a positive way. The Foundation hopes you agree and will step forward at this time to carry on the tradition for a future generations.
Packages are still being compiled for the Legacy 100 members. However, immediate recognition will be via the newsletter, our website and on our masthead for all future letterhead. Your name will appear down the side of our future letterhead as a Legacy 100 member. Additionally, we are compiling Aztec apparel packages.
If you have made a financial contribution in the past but it was under the $1k mark to become a member, then the Foundation will honor your previous contribution. For instance if you had previously donated $500 and wanted to be a Legacy 100 member than a second donation of $500 would only be needed to become a full member.
This campaign will be a great start for guaranteeing future years of Aztec Rugby. PLEASE DON'T DELAY- JOIN THE LEGACY 100 NOW.

| John L Quigley Family Trust Continues Scholarship Sponsorship
Early in January the Foundation received a $5000.00 check from the John L Quigley Family Trust. John was a stern supporter of rugby and I had the opportunity to witness this first hand when he joined our tour to Australia and Fiji in 1993.
This check is designated to be for scholarships only and will disbursed in full with the 2007/2008 scholarship awards. The Foundation will distribute application forms to the current team immediately and will review the applicant accomplishments in their efforts to support Aztec Rugby. The Foundation will further solicit outside input via the coaching staff, professors or references provided by the applicant.
Applicants will be judged in a number of categories including:
Team Contributions
Player Development
Financial Hardship
Player Impact
As in previous years the Foundation may award one or several scholarships. Scholarships will be awarded in early March of 2008.
We thank David Quigley and The John L Quigley Family Trust for their continued support.

| Aztec's Begin Division II Play
On Saturday January 26, 2008 the newly formed Aztec Division II side kicked off in their inaugural game. The game was a perfect setting for Aztec Rugby. Under the lights on a night that saw rain coming down, the Division II Aztec's went into action against UC Irvine. This was to be a tough match from the start with a young Aztec side facing off against UCI probably the preseason number 1 or 2 seed for Southern California Division II.
The nerves of the young side were tested early as UCI was able to capitalize on some early Aztec miscues running the score up to 14-0. The Aztec's were able to regroup though and put together a series of punishing break through runs followed by intense rucks and mauls to score their first try. Twenty minutes into the game saw the score tighten to 14-7. The Aztec team committed a few too many penalties though and UCI was able to slot some easy kicks for goal to finish the half at a score of 20-7.
The second half began with high hopes but UCI continued to take advantage of opportunities and controlled the field with a strong wind at their backs. In the end UCI put in a few more trys to extend their lead and walk away with well earned victory. Final score 49-7.
Key highlights for this match was that is was the first game of the year for the D2 team that fielded mostly freshman and sophomore players. They were up against a seasoned team of seniors vying for a D2 crown.
Nice efforts were turned in from the scrumhalf, second rows and flyhalf positions in a losing effort. Knowing the areas on which to correct, the Aztec coaching staff is focusing the team for a major rebound this weekend. The team is scheduled to kickoff a big weekend of rugby at SDSU against CS Fullerton. The team will be the curtain raiser for games to follow. The D2 team against CS Fullerton will kickoff at 11:00 on Saturday.

| AZTEC SEASON TO BEGIN THIS WEEKEND FEB 2ND
One week and counting until the 2008 Aztec Team laces up the boots for another exciting season. The team had a push back in their season opener last week. The game scheduled at UC Santa Barbara on January 26, 2008 was postponed due to heavy rains that rolled through Southern California over the last week. This game will need to be rescheduled later in the year.
The Aztec's will now look to begin league play this weekend at home versus Claremont. With 12 returning starters and a work effort that saw the team return to school one week early for 2 a day practices the team is itching to play. Claremont is a up and comer in D1 rugby though and will be a formidable opponent.
Game kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 PM at the SDSU Football practice fields located behind the Aztrack/55th street parking structure. Come on out and watch the second of three exciting home matches.
One reminder is to remember to pay for parking at one of the kiosk's located in the north end of the parking structure on each floor.

| IRB Sevens Scheduled for San Diego
The second year of the scheduled five year run for the International Rugby Board Seven's Championship is set to begin in San Diego on Feb 6 -10th, 2008.
The USA Sevens tournament is the largest rugby event in North America, showcasing two days of non-stop electrifying rugby, teamed with an international fan festival and a weekend of endless entertainment. The tournament features 16 nations and 44 matches over the weekend.
The venue for this rugby action is one of America's most spectacular stadiums, the new Petco Park, home of the San Diego Padres baseball team. The event will kickoff with The US Rugby Foundation Kickoff Reception.
This year's Kickoff Reception will be held once again at the San Diego Hall of Champions in Balboa Park on Wednesday, February 6 from 5:00-7:00 pm.
It's a great opportunity for your kids (and you) to meet some of the world's best rugby players. In addition, if last year's Reception was any indication, the lure of looking at some well-toned international athletes seems to attract the women as there were quite a few females in attendance.
There'll be a few brief speeches but the objective of the evening is for the San Diego rugby community to welcome the teams to San Diego and to show their support for the newest World Sevens Series venue.
The US Rugby Foundation will also be selling tickets for an end of the evening raffle which will include rugby balls signed by the different teams competing in the tournament and some tickets to the weekend's matches.
Admission for the Kickoff Reception is only $40. All proceeds raised from the event will be directed towards the youth and high school programs offered by the US Rugby Football Foundation.
Please register by Monday, February 4, 2008. Visit the USRFF website:
http://www.usrugbyfoundation.org/site/pp.asp?c=9fLHJVOxHmE&b=3642225 for more information about the Kickoff Reception, including how to register and directions to the Hall of Champions.
Additional events include Old Boys games scheduled for Thursday & Friday and a multi team event including Super League, D1, Collegiate and touch teams scheduled to take the pitch. If you haven't already planned to come hopefully this will sway your decision making process.
