to forward on.

Greetings!

There has been a fury of good news as the Aztec's get ready to start the fall preseason.   The three biggest headlines are:

1.  Current Head Coach Selected For World Cup Squad
2.  Aztec's Receive National Press
3.  Aztec's Receive Preseason Ranking at #6

Additionally, in this newsletter are the latest developments on and off the pitch including:

1. Alumni Day Fast Approaching
2. Website Formed
3. Foundation Vision & Financial Goals

First off though is a our special segment thanking the Foundation's latest financial contributors.  The Foundation would like to thank:

Bob Moore and Steve Forster.

We thank you for your generous contribution.  It is alumni like you that will continue to help build and strengthen the Foundation both now and into the future.  Way to Go Bob & Steve!

Aztec Head Coach Makes World Cup Squad

The crowning achievement in USA Rugby was bestowed on our Head Coach Dan Payne.  On August 15th, 2007 the USA Rugby Board announced that Dan Payne will be on the 30 man USA World Cup Squad.

Dan has been training vigorously for this goal practicing at both US based Olympic Centers for over six weeks.  In addition to his training he competed in the North American 4 series with a home and away series against Canada, the Churchill Cup in England and against Munster one of the perennial top Irish sides.

The USA team faces a daunting pool play in entering the World Cup.  The team will play England, Tonga, Somoa and South Africa in the month long first round.  Dan stated that "we know we are going up against some of the top sides the world has to to offer, however the US Squad has been training and preparing for this World Cup at a level that is unprecedented in USA Rugby history.  He continued by saying even though the odds are against us in this tough pool play, we are committed to the task at hand and welcome the challenge."

Dan has earned a wealth of knowledge of the latest training techniques and by playing against the best competition the world has to offer.  We know the current Aztec team will only benefit from these training techniques and insight.

We congratulate Dan for this pinnacle achievement and wish the USA team good luck.

On a side note, he has stated that he will officially retire from competitive rugby in October 2007.  Playing that is not coaching!

Aztecs Receive National Press

The latest Aztec resurgence was highlighted in the one of the nations premier rugby websites.  Goff on Rugby featured an article on their website in August entitled:

SAN DIEGO STATE GETS ANOTHER BOOST

The segment piece starts off with a great defensive photo shot of the Aztec vs Santa Barbara playoff game.  The article goes on to say that "San Diego State has gotten a few boosts over summer.  Their newly formed foundation has helped bring alumni back into the fold and will allow the program to raise money more effectively to help the program grow.  It continues with quotes from our head coach regarding the addition of the D2 squad for next year.

Preseason Polls

The first preseason polls are out and the Aztec's have climbed to #6 in the country.    Listed below are the USA top ten teams as projected by Goffonrugby.

1.  California
2.  BYU
3.  Penn State
4.  Navy
5.  Utah
6.  San Diego State - Comment from the article is: Coach Dan Payne is one to watch out for and his potential player pool is strong.

7.  Army
8.  New Mexico
9.  Texas A & M
10. Wyoming

Other:

12:  Cal Poly SLO
17:  UCSB

With this high of ranking the Aztecs will now have to be ready each and every weekend as teams will be gunning for them.  The team returns 11 of 15 starters from last years squad and has a bevy of up and coming all stars.  Most of these guys stayed in town for summer 7's and worked towards improving their game.  With continued dedication the team should be able to meet this challenge.
 Alumni Day Fast Approaching

If you have not done so already please plan to attend this year's Alumni Day.  The current team will host an alumni reunion during Homecoming weekend of  October  20, 2007.  Included in the Alumni events will be a golf outing, barbecue and play areas for all the family.  If you have not been to an alumni game in a while please come on out.  The students do a fantastic job in putting this event together.

For more information or golf hole sponsorships please contact Alex Main or Jeff Christensen at:

Website Domain Formed

Foundation development progress is continuing with the addition of our new domain name and soon to finalized website.  The domain name we have secured is:

aztecrugbyfoundation.org.

While still under construction it is our goal to have the website up and running by Q4 2007.  This is a key opportunity for us to provide every alumni and supporters instant access to upcoming events, newsletters, officers, principles and advertising opportunities.  Please keep in mind the Foundation's website when planning your companies advertising budgets next year.

Donation Request

Fellow Aztec's your financial help is needed.  As when you played, the current team operates on a minimal budget.  Even though the team conducts fundraising events throughout the year the results are not enough to secure the status and image of Aztec Rugby as a premier team in Southern California.  The addition of a Division II team will also challenge those limited resources.  You can be a part of a positive change for future young men for years to come.

We need your financial support.  We will accept all donation levels via check or credit card.  Premium donation packages are being assembled with details to follow in a later newsletter. These packages will include, Aztec gear, Letterhead Listing, Newsletter Recognition, Website Recognition and more.

The Foundations' financial vision is long term in nature.  We are looking to build an endowment fund that will not only help support the current team but for future generation of Aztecs.  We will be publishing our financial progress in future newsletter as a main article block.  This way we can all see the endowment grow!!

The Foundation would like to thank those sponsors, directors and alumni who have already donated including once again our latest donors Bob Moore & Steve Forster.

Alumni let's keep adding to the list of donors and make the team aware of the community and sponsors behind them.
