Aztec's Capture Las Vegas & Sun Splash Seven's Crown

This summer has been a busy one for those Aztecs that either are San Diego based or stayed into town to participate in Summer Sevens.  The players have been polishing their skills each Tuesday and Thursday under the tutelage of coaches David DiSorbo, Jim Wilson and Miguel Berthet.

Overall the team has competed in five tournaments including the Huntington Beach, Eagle Rock, Long Beach, San Diego and Las Vegas Sevens tournaments.  In those tournaments the team compiled an impressive 20 - 5 win loss record.

The highlight of the summer sevens season was back to back tournament victories in the social division of the Long Beach Summer Splash Sevens and last weekends victory in the collegiate division of the Las Vegas Midnight Sevens Tournament.  The team has been playing in club side divisions so to finally compete in a college division provided extra motivation in bringing home the hardware.  Nice job guys!

Aztecs Add Division II Side

In an effort to get more playing time for all players the Aztec coaching staff petitioned for and received permission from Southern California Rugby to enter a Division II side along with it's D1 counterpart.  What this means is that the Aztec's will now have three full teams competing in two separate divisions.

The coaching staff is excited by the new challenges and the opportunity to have all of the team play a full game each and every weekend.  They believe that if each player gets a full match every weekend their skill set will improve faster than if the player was only getting a half to twenty minutes of playing time.

"This is a direct result of our on the field success and aggressive recruiting campaigns," stated Head Coach Dan Payne.  While it will be a challenge from a cost and coaching standpoint, the speed of player development and the ability to field a younger development squad will be of the upmost importance down the road.  These players will be our stars of the future he additionally stated.

Website Domain Formed

Foundation development progress is continuing with the addition of our new domain name and soon to finalized website.  The domain name we have secured is:

aztecrugbyfoundation.org.

While still under construction it is our goal to have the website up and running by Q4 2007.  This is a key opportunity for us to provide every alumni and supporters instant access to upcoming events, newsletters, officers, principles and advertising opportunities.  Please keep in mind the Foundation's soon to be website when planning your companies advertising budgets next year.
Aztecs on You Tube

The Aztecs have placed an exciting clip of their victory over UCSB in the Southern California playoffs on You Tube.

The clip contains segments of the match including some bit hits and impressive runs as the Aztecs laid out the lumber in running away with a punishing victory.  The clip is roughly five minutes long with a choreographed youthful soundtrack.

 Database Development

After the distribution of the first newsletter we received numerous emails about how to forward the newsletter on.  As requested earlier we need your help.  The database of players numbers in the low 200's at this time.  From the Foundation standpoint we are at a loss as to why it is so low.

At the bottom of this newsletter is a link to forward the newsletter on.  Please continue to do so to help resurrect the database of players.  We would like to see this database in the thousands versus low hundreds.  Each of you have two to ten former players or supporters that you are still in contact with.  Please encourage them to sign up in the newsletter database.

We had a total of 10 additions to the database from the last newsletter.  Let's keep this number growing.

Donation Request

Fellow Aztec's your financial help is needed.  As when you played, the current team operates on a minimal budget.  Even though the team conducts fundraising events throughout the year the results are not enough to secure the status and image of Aztec Rugby as a premier team in Southern California.  The addition of a Division II team will also challenge those limited resources.  You can be a part of a positive change for future young men for years to come.

We need your financial support as well.  We will accept all donation levels via check or credit card.  Premium donation packages are being assembled with details to follow in a later newsletter. These packages will include, Aztec gear, Letterhead Listing, Newsletter Recognition, Website Recognition and more.

The Foundation would like to thank those sponsors, directors and alumni who have already donated including once again our latest donors Randy Kirk and Coach Dr Loc Vetter.

Alumni let's keep adding to the list of donors and make the team aware of the community and sponsors behind them.
