Everyone wants to visit Memphis for Graceland, Sun Studios, Beale Street and everything that is quintessentially Memphis.
These attractions give this southern city its flare, but do not encompass everything that Memphis has to offer culturally.
The Belz Museum of Asian and Judaic Art is another attraction that should not be overlooked. It is unique to Memphis and the country, housing one of the largest private collections of Asian art in the United States.
The Belz Museum collection has over 900 rare pieces of Asian art. Most of the collection is from China and dates back to the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), in which large pieces of jade were delicately abraded, ivory was finely carved, and silk robes were known for their elaborate embroidery.
The collection is not limited to the Qing Dynasty. Funerary pottery from the Tang Dynasty (618-907 A.D.), silver pieces from the Mongols, a cinnabar lacquered emperor's throne, and even a dinosaur egg and other pre-historic fossils that were excavated in China give visitors a glimpse into China's rich history and dynamic art.
