It is hard to believe that 2010 is already at an end. But 2011 promises to be a great year for the ICA. We were excited to recently be awarded capacity building grant monies by the Cleveland Foundation to improve our marketing and outreach capabilities. We have a new membership benefit structure in place (see below) and a roster of exciting projects scheduled. Be sure to keep reading all year to see how it unfolds!

As of January 1st, ICA debuts a new structure designed to more fully serve our membership. In response to numerous requests for personalized, on-site services, we have developed a set of options from which current members may select annually.

Members may now select one (1) of the following benefits each calendar year of current membership:

1. Extended tour of the ICA Conservation Center (can be used as an advocacy tool for boards, public officials, etc.)

2. Lecture on any of the following topics (can be used to train staff, as a public fundraising event, etc.):*
  • Introduction to conservation
  • Care and handling of paper-based materials
  • Care and handling of textiles
3. Half-day workshop on any of the following topics (can be used to train staff, as a public fundraising event, etc.):*
  • Framing paintings
  • Hinging and mounting paper-based materials
  • Creating customized book mounts
4. Artists' materials consultation with ICA's Materials Research Director/AMIEN administrator*

5. On-site general collections/facility survey of up to three hours*

6. Specific object consultations of up to three hours (on-site or at the ICA)*

*Please note: depending on location, some travel charges may apply. On-site events must be scheduled by August 31 but can take place anytime from January through November. There will be no on-site events in December.

For additional information, including a downloadable membership brochure and application form, please visit the ICA website.

One of the Antioch tile mosaics, prior to treatment.
Last year, Bowling Green State University asked the ICA to take on a fascinating project. Could we treat a series of mosaic tiles from the ancient city of Antioch (in modern-day Turkey) that date to the 1st or 2nd century CE? BGSU wanted both to have the tiles conserved and also for ICA objects conservation staff to offer advice on how best to display these very old and beautiful pieces.

The mosaics, which depict decorative elements such as birds and theater masks, will go through a multi-phase treatment that will involve: the removal of a previously applied, yellowed coating; surface cleaning; consolidation of crumbling tiles; and remounting on lightweight, rigid panels. The panels will then be installed under a protective glass layer in the floor of a new theater building that will open at BGSU in 2011.

Allen Memorial Art Museum's "Cleopatra" (ca. 1515)
ICA Senior Paintings Conservator Andrea Chevalier will be traveling to Europe in early 2011 with staff from the Allen Memorial Art Museum at Oberlin College. The purpose of the trip, generously funded by a grant from the Kress Foundation, is to conduct research on paintings in Paris and London collections created by Giovanni Pietro Rizzoli, also known as Giampietrino. The Allen Memorial Art Museum owns a panel painting by the artist called Cleopatra (ca. 1515); the results of the European research will inform Chevalier's conservation treatment of that piece. Upon completion of the research and treatment, Chevalier and AMAM staff will offer a joint public lecture on the project at Oberlin in 2011.

Kennedy Museum of Art, Ohio University
This year's recipient of our annual free collection survey will be the Kennedy Museum of Art at Ohio University in Athens, OH. The museum has asked that ICA Paper Conservator Jamye Jamison examine and make treatment recommendations for twenty-five important examples from their 1,500 piece contemporary print collection.

The Kennedy Museum intends to use the information gained from this process to apply for conservation grant funding to ensure long-term appropriate care for the prints, which is one of the primary reasons ICA offers its annual survey. Applications are due in late October each year; for additional information and to review the 2010 application, please visit our grant assistance page.

Felton Thomas, Valerie McCall, and Albert Albano
ICA was very pleased to participate in this year's Octavofest, a celebration of the book and paper arts in the Cleveland area. We offered two educational programs in connection with the event, a public lecture on the care and handling of paper-based materials at Case Western Reserve University and a workshop on book mount making.

In early November, ICA hosted an invitation-only closing reception for Octavofest planners and participants. Forty people attended, including representatives from Cleveland Public Library, Cleveland State University, and Case Western Reserve University. We were also delighted to welcome a staff member from Mayor Frank Jackson's office, Chief of Governmental Affairs for the City of Cleveland Valerie McCall.

Planning is already underway for the 2011 Octavofest celebrations. For additional information, visit the Octavofest website or Facebook page. You can shop for Octavofest-related items (while also financially supporting next year's programming) on CafePress.

Senior Paintings Conservator Andrea Chevalier inpaints one of the Elmer Brown murals.

ICA completed installation of two murals by local African-American WPA-era artist Elmer Brown in late 2010. The murals belong to the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority but are now on long-term loan to Cleveland State University, on view in the new multi-million dollar CSU Student Center on Euclid Avenue. ICA's work on the murals garnered favorable press coverage, including a front-page Metro Section feature in Cleveland's Plain Dealer newspaper.
