We begin this new year by looking more deeply into our past. In January, the ICA starts a long-term project to process and rehouse our own archives. We will be working with a student from the Kent State University School of Library and Information Science. The goal of the project, in part, is to prepare us for 2012, our 10th year in the Vitrolite Building and our 60th year of existence.

Coincidentally, we recently had the pleasure of welcoming Mrs. Barbara Flinn to the center. Mrs. Flinn served as assistant to the ICA's first director, Richard Buck, in the 1950s. She recalled how the ICA began in a basement office of Oberlin College's Allen Memorial Art Museum, with an adjoining closet to store art awaiting treatment. The organization has come a long way since then, as we hope the items in this month's e-newsletter suggest.

NTHP Forum Journal
The ICA's education and outreach services were featured in the Fall 2009 issue of the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Forum Journal. The ICA was one of only three conservation centers in the nation profiled in the piece, which focused on including conservation in a comprehensive collections management plan. All three article illustrations were of ICA educational programs. The Forum Journal is a benefit for "forum" level members of the National Trust, and is sent to nearly four thousand preservation professionals around the country.

The ICA was pleased to get a record number of applications for our annual Subsidized Survey program. Each fall we invite small collecting institutions to complete a short application and we select one to receive up to five free days of a conservator's time and expertise. We accepted nearly three times the number of applications in 2009 as in the two previous years.

The selection committee ultimately awarded the survey to St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Cleveland Heights. We have contacted all the organizations, however, with offers of assistance tailored to their specific needs. Applicants included local churches, universities, historical societies, museums and archives.

The next round of applications will be accepted in October 2010 and we encourage any collecting institution in need of assistance to apply. Previous recipients have included the Oberlin Heritage Center, the Massillon Museum, and the North Canton Heritage Society.

The ICA Paper Department completed two long-term conservation projects in 2009. ICA staff assisted with federal matching grant applications that resulted in substantial awards for both the Denison University Museum and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.

As we reported in our October 2007 issue, Denison Museum was awarded a $66,000 IMLS Conservation Support Grant to treat portions of its prints and drawings collection. The project included ICA conservators training Denison staff and student interns, so they can now perform ongoing collections care activities in a new treatment space also funded by the grant. Denison recently produced a video describing the project.

The Kelsey Museum also produced a video to celebrate the opening of its new permanent exhibition wing. The short film includes shots of the recently conserved watercolor reproductions of the Villa of Mysteries in Pompeii. The Kelsey received an IMLS Conservation Support Grant of $160,000 to underwrite the cost of treating these unique objects, which we reported on in both 2008 and 2009.

The ICA provides grant information and support through assisting with project planning, generating estimates, creating condition reports, and supplying letters of commitment and resumes of conservation professionals. For questions regarding grants, contact Director of Education Nicole Hayes.

At a recent grant panel, one reviewer commented on the difficulty of promoting conservation. Conservation that is impeccably done, she observed, is invisible. She was struck by how challenging it must be for the ICA to effectively market itself.

In late 2008, the ICA was one of only four institutions selected (from twenty-four applicants) by the Mandel Center for Nonprofit Organizations to receive strategic planning consultation services. Under the guidance of a team of Mandel graduate students, ICA board, staff and community partners engaged in a two-phase process that resulted in a comprehensive five-year plan.

One of the four main goals identified in the plan is to raise the ICA's public visibility. A Marketing and Development Committee has already been formed and is meeting regularly under co-chairs Barbara Tannenbaum (ICA board member and Director of Curatorial Affairs at the Akron Art Museum) and ICA Paintings Conservator Wendy Partridge.

This is an exciting time in the history of the ICA. As we move toward our 60th anniversary we are engaged in negotiations for several large-scale partnerships which would allow us to exponentially increase our community impact. The ICA Facebook page has over 200 self-subscribed "fans" from all around the globe, and our YouTube channel videos have been viewed thousands of times. Keep reading this e-newsletter for announcements of more exciting outreach initiatives in the months to come!

ICA Public Outreach Map
In one year, the ICA provided 60 hours of free public outreach in the form of telephone and email preservation advice. We assisted people in 26 states and 3 foreign countries.
