As we enter the summer months, the ICA is completing a number of long-term initiatives: the redesign of our website, the treatment of an enormous national treasure, and the first series of educational programs offered by our new Field Services department. But we are not resting on our laurels! We continue to move forward with the restoration of our Detroit Avenue home, with the planning of outreach opportunities, and with the never-ending work of preserving our region's outstanding culture heritage. Enjoy the warm weather, and enjoy this newsletter.

ICA Website

When the ICA launched its first website, we were one of the only conservation centers in the country to have a presence on the World Wide Web. That was over five years ago, and we had not yet relocated from the Allen Art Museum at Oberlin College to our present location on Detroit Avenue.

The organization has undergone many changes since then. The staff has increased, and new departments including Development, Architectural Restoration, and Field Services have been added. The move to Cleveland has raised our public profile and widened the array of services we are able to provide.

Recently, the ICA has worked with a professional designer to re-examine our "brand." The result of this effort is a new look for all our publications, including the ICA Review and ICA News Online.

The new structure of our website reflects all of our recent institutional changes. Redesigning it allowed us the opportunity to examine and update its content and improve its overall usability. Its look now mirrors that of our other electronic and hardcopy products. We hope you will take a moment to visit the new site and tell us what you think!

Conservators swab a Steinberg panel.
The Paintings Department recently completed work on an 80-foot-long mural by artist and illustrator Saul Steinberg, creater of numerous iconic images for The New Yorker including the famous 1976 cover, "View of the World from 9th Avenue."

Steinberg painted the mural for the original Cincinnati Terrace Plaza Hotel. It now belongs to the Cincinnati Art Museum and is being showcased in conjunction with a major Steinberg retrospective open at CAM this summer.

The mural is in eight sections, with one-and-a-half sections lost during its original deinstallation in the 1960s. It took five ICA paintings conservators over 1,500 hours to treat the enormous art work. Each section had a heavily discolored varnish removed by hand, using individual cotton swabs. A new backing support was added to each panel, allowing easier installation. The project was funded by a "Save America's Treasures" grant.

The completed mural went on display in June. The exhibition will be open from July through September. For more information, see the Calendar of Events below.

Jennifer Lis
Jennifer Lis
Post-Graduate Paintings Fellow
Jennifer grew up in Farmington Hills, Michigan. She graduated with honors from the University of Notre Dame, with a double major in fine arts and art history, in 2001. Five years later, she received an MAC, or Master of Arts in Conservation, from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Jennifer has already spent many hours assisting with the treatment of the Saul Steinberg mural, and will be working on projects in the Paintings Department for the next year.

Jerry McPherson

Jerry McPherson
Controller
Jerry brings a vast amount of professional experience to his new position at the ICA, including sixteen years as Business Manager of the Holden Arboretum, Risk Manager for the Euclid City Schools, Grant and Contract Administrator at the Georgia Tech Research Institute, and staff accountant for a local manufacturer. A 32-year resident of Euclid, Jerry's special passion is gardening and his garden has been featured in several local newspapers. In 1999, his garden received "Honorable Mention" in the amateur category for back yard gardens in the "Golden Trowel Awards," sponsored by Garden Design Magazine.

The ICA also wishes to extend its heartfelt appreciation to Fran Frabotta, who has acted as the ICA Controller since 2004. Fran joined the ICA as a consultant from Polen and Battles CPAs, Inc. during a significant period of transition. She has provided structure and stability to the finance department and been an integral member of the ICA staff. We want to thank her for all she has done and wish her well as she takes on a new role.

ICA Fine Art Storage Facility
Congratulations to the Akron Art Museum, which recently completed the renovation and expansion of its building. During the multi-year construction period, AAM chose to store the bulk of its collection in Cleveland, in the ICA's fine art storage facility.

The ICA maintains affordable, state-of-the-art, long- or short-term fine art storage for single pieces or entire collections. We offer these services to institutions, corporations, and individuals.

The facility includes 41,000 cubic feet of specially designed storage space. The area is constantly monitored to maintain a 50% ±5% RH (relative humidity) and a steady temperature of 65-70°F through its individually zoned HVAC system. A 16-foot entry access stands adjacent to an environmentally controlled loading dock, which is equipped with a hydraulic lift to facilitate the movement of objects of all sizes. While in storage, collection items are available to clients during regular work hours.

If you would like to inquire about storing your collections, please contact Project Coordinator Christopher Pelrine at cpelrine@ica-artconservation.org.

Ohio Preservation Council
The ICA is very proud to be a member of the Ohio Preservation Council, "a broad coalition of Ohio libraries, archives, historical societies, and conservation resources. Its mission is to provide a network for preservation education and to support preservation activities within the state."

In September, the OPC will hold its 2007 Symposium. The program is entitled, "Preservation Strategies for the Care and Storage of Photographic Collections." The one-day event will be held at Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio. It will feature nationally known photographic expert Gary Albright, and a number of other presenters including the ICA's Emily Helwig and Charles Eiben.

Cleveland Public Library, Carnegie West Branch
Nearly sixty people attended this free, six-part lecture series at the Carnegie West Branch of the Cleveland Public Library. ICA conservators introduced the public to the care and handling of their personal treasures, including paintings, antique furniture, scrapbooks, and textiles. Several of the one-hour lectures lasted nearly two hours due to the high number of questions asked by attendees. At one lecture, staff from a local museum brought a collection object and the conservator offered an impromptu assessment and suggestions for treatment and storage!

The ICA's new education and outreach department is just over six months old, and has offered three public programs to date. A number of future programs, including workshops, symposia, and conferences, are currently being planned. If your organization has an educational need, or if you would like to suggest topics for future programs, please contact Field Services Officer Nicole Hayes at nhayes@ica-artconservation.org.

Students from Graceland University tour the lab.
Did you know that the ICA offers laboratory tours to interested groups? In addition to our regularly scheduled member tours, we welcome those who want to learn more about conservation and preservation.

Recent groups include the New Westsiders Antiques Club; foreign preservationists sponsored by the Cleveland Council on International Relations and Cleveland State University; a museum studies class from Graceland University; and students from the Cleveland Institute of Art.

The ICA is a not-for-profit organization, and offers tours free of charge. Donations are gratefully accepted. An appointment is required in advance. If you are interested in scheduling a visit, contact Field Services Officer Nicole Hayes at nhayes@ica-artconservation.org.
