Welcome to the spring edition of ICA News Online. In this issue you will find articles that reflect the broad range of activities in which the ICA is currently engaged, from architectural and object conservation, to educational programming, to public outreach. As always, we welcome your feedback.

Paint analysis of interior surface, Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument
In 2006, the ICA was asked to undertake several projects that included forensic color investigation. As part of his training at the Royal Academy of Fine Art, School of Conservation in Copenhagen, Denmark, Paintings Conservator Per Knutås studied forensic color investigation and the conservation of decorative surfaces. The ICA therefore decided to create an Architectural Conservation and Restoration Division headed by Per, who works closely with Objects Conservator Shelley Smith.

One of the primary services offered by the Architectural Division is forensic color investigation, in which layers of paint and wallpaper are systematically exposed to show the history of a surface. Walls and wood trim are carefully uncovered and different paint campaigns can be compared to give a full understanding of a room?s previous appearances.

In addition to investigational work, the ICA also performs conservation and reconstruction of painted decorations, including stone, wood, and metal ornamentation. A significant portion of the department?s work to date has been the de-installation and installation of murals, tiles, and decorated surfaces. The ICA also consults and offers educational workshops on cultural heritage preservation.

Recent architectural projects have included the reconstruction of a lost mural at Stan Hywet Hall in Akron, Ohio, as well as a forensic color investigation of the interior of the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument in downtown Cleveland.

If you are interested in learning more about the ICA?s Architectural Division and its services, please contact Per Knutås at pknutas@ica-artconservation.org.

Charles Mintz, Albert Albano, and Mark Heppner
The ICA has begun hosting membership events at member organizations and corporations. The events are designed to communicate the mission and activities of the ICA to our members and friends in meaningful and interesting ways.

Our first membership event was a brunch at Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens on Sunday, March 11, 2007. ICA's Board of Directors, members, and staff enjoyed an all-access afternoon at the historic house museum in Akron, Ohio. Paul Volpe, President of City Architecture, gave a presentation about his career in architectural preservation.

ICA members enjoy a host of benefits including discounts on conservation services and educational offerings, publications, and access to the extensive ICA library. We look forward to hosting more membership activities this spring and summer. Please contact Samara McCullough, Development Officer, at smccullough@ica-artconservation.org for more information about ICA membership.

Cleveland Public Library, Carnegie West Branch
On Tuesdays from April 17 to May 22, ICA conservators will introduce the public to the field of conservation and the wide range of materials and information that conservators work with, while highlighting care and handling of personal artifacts and family heirlooms.

This FREE, six-part lecture series will occur at the Carnegie West Branch of the Cleveland Public Library. Presenters will discuss preventive conservation and provide information on practical ways to ensure the long-term stability of artifacts and documents. Ethical standards for the field will also be addressed.

Jason Byers
Assistant Conservation Technician
Jason recently joined the ICA as a technician in the Objects Department. He is a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and attended Kent State University, where he received a bachelor of fine arts in sculpture. Jason's previous employers include the Akron Museum of Art, where he was Assistant Preparator. He joins a talented group of ICA staff members who are artists in their own right, and has had several showings of his work. Jason is also a musician.

RagGonNon panel being re-installed
The ICA is proud to have been chosen by the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center to conserve its signature piece of public art, "Journeys," a RagGonNon by 2004 MacArthur Fellow Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson.

"Journeys" is comprised of two fabric panels, each approximately twenty-five feet high by eighteen feet wide, covered with objects including beads, shells, leaves, bark, handmade paper, twigs, and music boxes. It is designed to be a hanging work of art, which over time will create stresses in the piece. The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, recognizing the importance of the art quilt and of cultural heritage preservation in general, undertook preventative conservation to forestall any future damage. ICA conservators constructed a new secondary backing for "Journeys" that allows the panels to be remounted while off-setting much of the tension related to hanging it.

Paintings Conservator Heather Galloway lecturing
Over fifty people attended the ICA's recent five-part lecture series, "Preserving Sacred Artifacts." The lectures, held at Cleveland's Trinity Cathedral Commons, covered topics including architecture, wooden sculpture, metal objects, and textiles. Participants included students from Ursuline College's Historic Preservation Program and the Lorain County Sacred Landmarks Initiative, which used the series as a training exercise for its volunteer staff.

Congratulations to the Oberlin Heritage Center and the Massillon Museum! Both organizations were awarded fully-funded conservation surveys, after submitting outstanding applications for the ICA's recent "Subsidized Survey" program.

OHC, which was recently accredited by the American Association of Museums, has asked ICA conservators to help identify preservation priorities for its wooden furniture collection. Massillon is asking for assistance with its paintings collection. Both organizations demonstrated a commitment to collections care, and each has made great strides in improving the quality of its storage environments and care and handling procedures in recent years.

ICA conservators will make on-site visits to each museum to conduct collection surveys. Written condition reports and suggestions for treatment will be provided to collections care staff. And the ICA will continue these relationships in the months to come, assisting museum staff as they move forward in implementing recommendations.

If your organization would benefit from a preservation planning assessment, a collection survey, or an item-level survey, help and grant monies are available. For more information, please contact Field Services Officer Nicole Hayes at nhayes@ica-artconservation.org.

Conservator Shelley Smith examining an object
Did you know that the ICA offers free object consultations? The first Thursday of every month is Examination Day in the ICA laboratories. Consultations are limited to one thirty-minute session with a conservator. Sessions focus on condition assessment and discussions of possible treatment options; estimates of value are not provided. If you are interested in scheduling an appointment for an upcoming Examination Day, contact Registrar Amanda Mikolic at 216-658-8700.
