BULLY TIPS

FOR TEACHING ACCEPTANCE

Buzzy

Buzzy says:

The world is full of problems: wars, famines, natural disasters, diseases. For adults and children alike, anxiety can cause frustration and anger. Teach your children that only through acceptance can we move forward to make positive changes. Acceptance is not giving up, it is acknowledging the facts of a situation. Only then can we  decide to create change . . . for the earth or for ourselves.

HEARTFELT THANKS
end of 2011

This is National Volunteer Week, April 15-21, 2012. Museums and all non-profits rely on volunteers. One of the more remarkable facts found that Americans contribute an astounding one million volunteer hours a week to Museums.

Although we are a traveling museum, we also rely totally on volunteers, those dedicated, selfless souls who, in addition to the responsibilities they have in their homes and work places, still volunteer time to help spread our mission of peace education. We have an all volunteer staff and all donations are dedicated to children's programming. We are amazed and so grateful for those willing souls who share their time and talents with us. All of us at the Children's PEACE Center want to express our gratitude and appreciation to all of you who work as volunteers on behalf of our organization and the children we serve.

DID YOU KNOW?

Both houses of Congress are considering bills that address bullying in schools. The bills are H.R. 1648 and S. 506,

Safe Schools Improvement Act of 2011.

The bills would amend the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 to require states, on an ongoing basis, to:

(1) collect and report certain

information on bullying and harassment by youth in their elementary and secondary schools and communities;

(2) conduct, and report the results of, a needs assessment for bullying and harassment prevention programs; and

(3) provide technical assistance to local educational agencies (LEAs) and schools in their efforts to thwart bullying and harassment.

end of 2011
Read more about these bills and let your representatives know how you feel about them.

WORDS TO LIVE BY

Humankind has not woven the web of life.
We are but one thread within it.
Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves.
All things are bound together. All things connect.

Greetings!

I feel so small when I think of the Earth that we all live on. Earth Day is a way for us all to think about our beautiful planet and how each one of us, no matter how small, can make a positive impact.

Leave a markOur exhibit "Leave Your Mark" helps us realize that everything we do leaves a mark. To leave a positive mark we need to think about our environmental footprint which is the way we handle our food, trash, bodies, homes, etc. However, what we say and do also leaves a "mark" on the people of the earth.

end of 2011The new movie "Bully" promises to raise awareness of all the negative "marks" that are being used by some. The process of being bullied or becoming a bully starts young. That's why we start teaching elementary aged children peacemaking skills. They need to know how to handle themselves, how to protect themselves, and how to make good choices so they do not endanger themselves or others.

View the trailer for Bully here.

end of 2011We as parents, teachers, mentors and caregivers can start the positive process by being kind ourselves in our words and actions. We must remember that children watch what adults do and follow our examples. What kind of "mark" will you leave for the children that are watching you?

Be Earthwise
by Jessica Quinn, KSU Intern

recycleBeing earth-wise can mean many things to different people. It can mean eating fresh food that is free from pesticides and other harmful chemicals or riding a bike to work. Using reusable bags, recycling, and conserving water are all ways to be earth-wise as well. Being earth-wise is important to live a healthy and balanced life. It is also important for individuals to have a healthy and positive impact on our environment, because by abusing our world, we are creating detrimental outcomes.

Being earth-wise not only benefits our world, but it can also benefit our wallets as well. For example, by living organic and growing your own food or by letting our clothes just dry outside, we are actually saving ourselves money! Just through making chaorganic gardennges to your everyday life, we can all make a huge impact to alter the negative effects on our natural world. Even just making small changes to the way we live, such as walking instead of driving, growing your own fruits and vegetables, and recycling things such as ink cartridges or your old cell phones can help start the journey to a harmonious and healthy world.

I Love the Green and Brown Trees
by Brewer Thompson, 8 years old

I love the green and brown trees.

Some may think I'm even a tree hugger.

I love to climb up the tall trees

And swing from their big, strong branches.

The oxygen I breathe comes from the trees,

So in thanks I give them my breath.

My shelter is built from the giving trees

It helps provide a home for my family.

My favorite place in the world is with trees

Under it in the shady breeze or in its loving arms.

I love the green and brown trees.

BOOKS FOR THE SPECIAL CHILDREN

IN YOUR LIFE

The Lorax
The LoraxPublished in 1971, and perhaps inspired by the "save our planet" mindset of the 1960s, The Lorax is an ecological warning that still rings true today amidst the dangers of clear-cutting, pollution, and disregard for the earth's environment. In The Lorax, we find what we've come to expect from the illustrious doctor: brilliantly whimsical rhymes, delightfully original creatures, and weirdly undulating illustrations. But here there is also something more--a powerful message that Seuss implores both adults and children to heed. Perfect for kids ages six to 100!

This classic book has been turned into a movie that children of all ages will love!

One Well - The Story of
Water on Earth
One Well

Seen from space, our planet looks blue. This is because almost 70 percent of Earth's surface is covered with water. Earth is the only planet with liquid water -- and therefore the only planet that can support life. All water is connected. Every raindrop, lake, underground river and glacier is part of a single global well. Water has the power to change everything -- a single splash can sprout a seed, quench a thirst, provide a habitat, generate energy and sustain life. How we treat the water in the well will affect every species on the planet, now and for years to come. One Well shows how every one of us has the power to conserve and protect our global well. One Well is part of CitizenKid: A collection of books that inform children about the world and inspire them to be better global citizens. Ages eight and up.

President's Peace Ponderings

visitors to the Peace MobileI really enjoyed our Art Contest and Art Festival. It was a great way to see what the children think about being Earth-wise. Plus it was their willingness to share their ideas and talents that was equally impressive.

Children help us bring our awareness to the fun things in life when sometimes we feel burdened with all the "stress" of life. By helping each other we can all learn to deal with the stresses that weend of 2011 have. Sometimes vacation can help. Since school is almost over, we begin to think about the summer. We're all getting excited about what we'll get to do during the summer. But even that can cause stress. Children may have to be left alone, or parents are concerned about the expenses of summer camps or vacations.

But summer can be a wonderful time and not cost a lot. Acworth has some wonderful free events plus all the beaches.bicycling You can have a picnic in your own backyard, or go for a walk in the park. Set up a movie on your garage door and invite the neighbors for a "drive-in theater". Add popcorn and you have a fantastic, stress free neighborhood fellowship.

Think of all the free things you can do by yourself or to get to know your neighbors. Ask your children for ideas to share and have fun. We'd love to hear from you on your Summer ideas of what to do for free. Visit our facebook page and tell us about your summer plans. Meantime, enjoy our Earth and all those on it, and have a great peaceful Summer.

Sincerely,
Andria Melham
