NO CORK? TRY THIS.................

A rod grip material described as "revolutionary" is being made available to the fishing tackle market. Q Suber has been registered by Bluemoon Fishing Ltd, which says it looks like cork and feels like cork but is 25% lighter and produces the finest quality hard-wearing grips.
.
The first generation cork substitute does not degrade or stain like traditional cork, is resistant to saltwater and sunlight and can be formed and sanded, says Bluemoon.

A potential shortage of cork has been a talking point in the industry for some time. Demand from the wine industry, the slow regeneration of cork plantations, the threat of disease and the trend for some cork farmers to diversify into other crops have combined to threaten supply.

Some brands have begun looking at alternatives. Shimano's new Power Leather Grip will be featured on some of its top end rods in 2009.
A paper, The Regeneration of a Marginal Cork Oak, for the Journal for Vegetation Science in 2006 describes the quercus suber as occurring mainly in forestations in central and western parts on the Iberian Peninsula and also in some eastern areas. It is also found in North Africa and Italy.
