Happy New Year from Breakaway Bikes & Fitness!

The number one New Year's resolution is, of course, to lose weight. Now, guess what the number one failed New Year's resolution is. You guessed it. Nevertheless, and though it might just be the Benadryll talking, I'm optimistic for 2010. But then, thanks to my connection with Breakaway, I take RPM. And you can too. For those of you that missed your chance to get into an RPM class, we are opening a new session, beginning January 25th, that will run for 12 weeks, Mondays and Wednesdays each week, from 6:30-7:30 a.m. Sign up now!

Or perhaps your resolution is to start commuting more often. Having just returned from a week-long stint in St. Paul, MN (the coldest major US city in the lower 48) where the high never broached 5 degrees my entire stay, I know just how difficult that is. Fortunately, i was equipped with excellent cold weather apparel from Louis Garneau, purchased, where else, but at Breakaway. Here are the big three items I was "palping" (as the kids say) on my one brief ride:

-Typhoon Gloves,  lobster style for diminished surface area
-The 2000 Balaclava, for ear, face, and head protection
-Chemical feet and hand warmers. These are an absolute must this time of year. Your hands and feet are apt to go numb long, long before any other part of your body, as anyone who's been riding in Philadelphia lately will surely note.

Now, I am a die hard outdoor rider, so  I'll use these season after season rather than riding indoors all the time, but there are times when even the most diehard rider recognizes it's not safe to ride outside. But alas! What if you didn't sign up for RPM, and you don't quite have the motivation to ride the lovely trainer your spouse got you for Christmas for more than an hour (and what would you do if your ipod breaks?!)? Fortunately, even if you don't want to commit to a whole session of RPMs, drop-ins are always welcome, provided we have the space. You are encouraged to call 215.568.6002 or drop in ahead of time to reserve a spot. Prices are $15 for a one-hour session and $25 for a weekend 2-hour session. (Coached athletes and members of Breakaway-sponsored teams get an additional discount.)  You're sure to get the best indoor workout you've ever had. A few of these and your fitness and form will surely reach new heights.

Speaking of reaching new heights, racers, have you set your goals for the upcoming season? Perhaps an upgrade, a podium, the BAR championship? Well, whether your goals are as modest as completing your first metric century or trying your first race, to as ambitious as KONA or the national championship podium, the most bang for your buck is going to come from getting the right training program for you. You can spend $4000 on Zipp wheels and a DuraAce group and you'll certainly be one or two watts faster and a  few hundred grams lighter. But on a $79/month training program you'll cut more weight from your ride and add more watts to your threshold than any thousands of dollars worth of equipment will buy. Read about our coaching programs here.

Psssst. Wanna get free coaching? I thought so. Want a sweet new bike too? But of course! Why not combine the two then? For a limited time, when you buy any bike at $1500 or more, not only do you get our $75 precision fit absolutely free, but also a free month's worth of coaching. Email us for more information, or talk to any of our sales associates. We especially encourage seasoned riders to take us up on this offer, since as they well know, gone are the days of rapid day-to-day improvements. Every little bit matters once you reach a certain level, and it takes a smart coach with good rapport and dedication to your success to push you through that plateau.

You know what the other problem with getting faster is? The burden of aesthetic expectations. If you're going to be good, it's important to look the part. Well, lucky for you we are about to add a new sick looking line of bikes to our high end collection. (If you clicked that link, you might want to check the corners of your mouth--this is what we obsessives refer to as bike-p0rn). That's right, Breakaway is pleased to announce the addition of Kestrel to their line of high end bikes.  With the addition of Kestrel Breakaway continues to offer the largest selection of road and triathlon bikes in the Philadelphia region.  Kestrel's latest addition to their award winning triathlon line, the 4000 is already getting great reviews and is raising the bar in the industry for aerodynamics.  With the addition of Kestrel, Breakaway can continue to be a leader in bike fit services by offering a wide range of bike geometry from our diverse line of bikes.   Breakaway offers professional bike fitting and expert coaching and has been providing these services for over 10 years.  At Breakaway we realize a bike is only as good as the fit, and we are determined to match you with the best bike possible.   Our diverse offering of bikes includes Fuji, Felt, Giant, Kestrel, and Scott.   Visit Breakaway to see for yourself why we are so well know for selling performance bikes.
