After the wettest spring in recent memory, summer has finally arrived, and now, whether you're prepping for Kona or just dusting off the old cruiser for weekends at the Shore, Breakaway is the one-stop shop to meet all your cycling and fitness needs.
If you've stopped in the store lately, you may have noticed a few new faces. That's because as demand for service rises, we are still committed to the best service and best turnaround time in the city. That's why in addition to our head mechanic and all-around great guy,
Shawn Hurley, Breakaway is pleased to welcome our new expert mechanic, Phil Forrest. If you've got a penchant for classic equipment, Phil is the man to talk to. Go ahead, ask Phil his thoughts on steel frames or vintage Campagnolo components--but be prepared to have a long chat! Phil has a thing or two to say about it all. We've also welcomed three new salespeople to the floor, Todd, Javier, and Nathan. They're more than willing to show you around our showroom and training center.
Along with new faces, we now boast several new and improved products. We recently ordered dozens of Vittoria Corsa EVO "Open Tubular" clincher tires, recently dubbed by the
VeloNews' reviewer, "The
best tire and tube I have ever ridden." This year they have upped the thread count to an industry-best 320 TPI, to give them a supple yet durable ride. And they are available in five different color options to keep you riding in style.
When you walk to our main showroom, you can't help but notice our beautiful new TT/Triathlon bikes. The
Scott Plasma is a beauty to behold, and quite possibly the fastest thing on two wheels. And, most importantly, unlike the Cervelo P4 (whose makers refuse to submit it to independent testing against the Felt DA and Scott Plasma), it complies with all the
UCI rules, so you can ride it in all the major Time Trials and Triathlons in the area. Or if you're more concerned about budget, or just hoping to set a new personal best on the MLK Drive Time Trial on Saturday mornings, then perhaps the
Felt B16 is more up your alley. It is the single most affordable full-carbon fiber time trial bike in production. And, as an added bonus to you Temple fans out there, it comes in a stylish cherry & black.
If speed is your thing, but you can't afford those $2,000 Zipp wheels, do not fret! Available for weekend rentals are the world's fastest wheels. Unlike every other wheel, the
sub-9 disc actually creates
propulsion rather than drag when you're riding it. Pair it with a
Zipp 404 and you're sure to raise a few eyebrows as you blow by the competition. Call us today at (215) 568-6002 to make reservations.
Rates start at just $50 for the weekend!
We at Breakaway also realize that for some, speed and spandex don't have the same appeal as freedom and comfort. That's why we carry a full line of
Fuji,
Felt,
Scott,
SE, and
Giant mountain, hybrid, commuter, single speed, fixed gear, and hybrid bicycles. Starting at under $300, the Giant
Sedona series is the ideal bike for leisurely family rides on the weekends. Style afficianados wil dig the slick
Bowery '84 or
Felt Curbside. Commuters will appreciate the industry-leading German engineering that made Scott famous as the makers of the world's lightest and most stable bike, as that technology has been passed on to their much more affordable commuter line. Breakaway welcomes you to come on in and put a Scott
Sub or
Sportster up against the cobblestones of Old City or the Manayunk towpath on a test ride. We're certain they'll more than pass the muster. And the best part is, all of our bikes come with a 10-year service plan. As often as you like, bring the bike in for our $40 "
soup or salad" tuneup
absolute free. And, as an added bonus, you get 10% off any accessories you get with the bike for the following month, and you get an invitation to a flat-fixing class. The class, taught Tuesday nights by our friendly and knowledgable shop manager
Jonas Mendoza, costs as much as a single flat repair, and can save you boatloads of cash in these tough economic times. If you're intrested, call Jonas at the shop or
e-mail him before Monday evening.
Have friends or relatives visiting from out of town? Then follow the advice of the
NY Times, Shape Magazine, and
Outside Magazine, and stop by our rental shack at
1 Boathouse Row. We have a full fleet of
Fuji Absolutes for you and your loved ones to try, and our rates simply cannot be beat. You can rent them by the hour ($10), day ($30), or weekend ($60). We're open 10-7 on Saturdays and 10-5 on Sundays. Also, try stopping by the shop at 1923 Chestnut to rent during the week. Be advised, though, that these rentals are very popular, and they are rented on a first come, first serve basis, so the early you stop by the better luck you'll have.
Spring might have been a little cool for your liking, but few doubt summer will pass without a heatwave. Undoubtedly a trip to the pool or beach is in your near future. But with all the rain keeping you indoors it may have been a little tougher to shed those hibernation pounds. Or perhaps your race season is heating up, your peak races approaching, but you still feel sluggish up the hills or lack that finishing kick. Whether your desire is to shed a few extra pounds or slay the competition, the answer is the same:
RPM. Our summer session starts the week following the 4th of July festivities.
E-mail head coach
Joe Wentzel today to reserve your spot before they fill. And if you cyclists, swimmers, runners, ad multisport athletes desire to take your health and fitness to the next level, consider any of our numerous
coaching plans for a more intensive approach. We're sure to have the plan to meet your goals.
And finally, I would be remiss if I failed to mention the grand success of several of our sponsored athletes and teams. Verducci-Breakaway, our pro women's team, has been tearing it up on the women's pro UCI circuit with Jessie McClean taking home the yellow leaders jersey at the Tour of The America's Dairy Land 10 day stage race. Our tri-team
T-3 is currently successfully defending last year's title as the top tri team in the Greater Philadelphia Area. And Quaker City Wheelmen/Breakawaybikes.com is currently Pennsylvania's
best overall team, with the
top category 1-2-3 rider, and the entire podium in
category 3/4 racing. Follow all their results at
PACycling.org. Not to be outshined, Breakaway coached athlete Bill Beardsley recently won the Eagleman 70.3 Triathlon, earning him a spot at Kona, the most prestigious and
de facto world championship Ironman Triathlon. Another Breakaway coached Athlete Nik Vedejs recently won the PA State Time Trial Championship in Clarks Valley PA with a smashing sub hour 40k. Breakaway had over 20 athletes in the Philly Tri last weekend who had their personal best performances in that event. Congratulations to all of you. Come in soon for an RPM class for the opportunity to test yourself against some of these world class athletes.
