November 2006 Breakaway Newsletter
"We care for your equipment and your health."
Following up on my apology for the last newsletter that I sent. I want to offer an apology specifically to our athletes that had achieved great success in 2007 and may have been over shadowed in the last e-mail that was sent out. I have included your accolades in this November newsletter and want to congratulate each of you again. I also offer our congratulations to all Breakaway athletes that continue to set and reach your own personal and athletic goals.

Sincerely,

Joseph A. Wentzell

E-Soles Custom Footbeds Available Only at Breakaway

We are very excited to have been selected by eSoles to represent the Greater Philadelphia Metropolitan market. Breakaway was recognized by eSoles as the best retailer to represent the market to cyclists, triathletes and runners as well as all who care to improve the quaility of their play, work, or everyday life.

Esoles offer Footbeds for Cycling, Running, General Fitness, and everyday use. For cyclist the Esoles have been shown to increase power and produce less fatique. Your feet, knees and back will be eternally grateful for using Esoles. The superior alignment delivered by 3D Tru Capture technology is particularly helpful for cyclist given that the foot is designed to wal and run rather than cycle. The constant application of force to the pedals often results in foot numbing that Esoles can help relieve.

As we age, get injured, get active or simply function in our daily lives our feet compensate. The arches in our feet change; we encounter ankle sprains and many other wear and tear situations. eSoles turn back the clock by re-aligning the foot and the rest of the body. Leave the old "you" behind, "start to feel better and perform better."

Dressing For The Weather
Brian Kall
I am often asked for suggestions on the best clothing for the changing seasons. And when the weather officially turns cold, everyone wants to know what clothing is going to be right to keep them riding comfortably. We bring the best pieces of clothing from the best companies to our store to serve your cycling needs. My first statement is to always wear a base layer.

In cycling, we generate both a lot of sweat and a lot of wind. In the summer this is okay as it serves to cool us off, but when it gets colder, this just serves to make us miserable. Even in the summer, cycling jerseys don’t always cut it to keep us dry. If you notice, the pros are all wearing base layers on the hottest days of the Tour de France and the Vuelta a Espana. Base layers range from the super thin to the super thick, but they all serve one basic purpose: To keep your skin dry and comfortable.

The thicker base layers are what you want to wear in the cooler months to keep a thermal layer against your skin to maintain your body temperature. Also important is an outer layer that is truly windproof. As we ride faster we generate plenty of wind, additional to the natural kind. We need something to block this, and a vest or jacket will keep wind from channeling right through you. I remember when I got started cycling and the really good windblock wasn’t readily available. You would see cyclists just layered to the hilt with neon clothes from the eighties. We would all have on so many layers our arms couldn’t move. Now with the proper items, you can layer a thermal base layer, a jersey with pockets to carry your personal needs, and a vest or jacket to block the wind. This combination gives you all the physical freedom to stretch and move your arms to signal other riders.

When it gets really cold, you will find that a jacket that is both windproof and thermal will be needed. But no matter what you wear as an outer layer, a good base layer that keeps your skin dry and your sweat moving to the outer layers to evaporate is really important. My last statement on cycling clothing is to wear items that are versatile, such as arm warmers, knee and leg warmers, vests, and sunglasses. These are all items that you can put on in the morning and take off as the day goes on and gets warmer and are easily stashed in a jersey pocket for safekeeping. Come into the store for a look at the latest styles from Descente, Louis Garneau, Sugoi, and more. And be sure to let us know if you have any questions.
