The Beginning of Boat Season
February marks the beginning of boat season for all us water lovers. Why? Because February marks Vancouver's Boat Show at BC Place and next season's new and exciting boats.

In order to ignite the excitement in you here is a run down of the different types of boats that are sure to be a memorable time!

Recreational Kayaks
Recreational kayaks are primarily pleasure boats, intended for paddling in calm conditions, close to land. They are short (9 to 12 feet long) and stable (26 to 32 inches wide) and designed to be user friendly. Some are configured as "sit-on-top" kayaks, with no cockpit. Others are "sit-in" kayaks. These have large cockpits that are easy to enter and exit, but which are not designed for or safe in open water.

Hobie

Hobie Kayaks have brought something brilliantly new to the sport of kayaking: Pedals.

Each of their Hobie MirageŽ models have patented

MirageDriveŽpedaling system. Which will take you further, faster, with a huge emphasis on fun.

Here's how the MirageDrive actually works: you pedal by stepping alternately left and right, not unlike an exercise stepper, to drive two underwater flippers. Feet first.

But wait, there's more...

Kayak Fitness

Sea kayaking is considered to be a relatively low-impact activity that can contribute to improved cardiovascular health.
It is also possible to build the muscles of the back, chest and arms through the action of paddling if done on a regular basis.

A paddler's torso and legs may also get a workout while sea kayaking if they are used to apply pressure that powers and maintains balance and control of the boat. Research shows that an ideal aerobic exercise establishes regular, rhythmic contractions in the large muscle groups.
Paddling a sea kayak smoothly meets this definition, using the large muscles of your chest, back and core.
