Explore: Mount Benson

Mount Benson

Any visitor taking the ferry from Vancouver to Nanaimo is greeted by a stunning vista of small rocky islands and sloping green mountains. As you draw closer to Nanaimo, you can't help but notice Mount Benson crowding the town towards the seashore.

This small giant rises about 1,000 meters above sea level. Its summit, a leisurely 4 hour hike, reveals a view of the untamed wilderness of Vancouver Island, a string of coastal communities and the entire span of the Georgia Strait.

Mount Benson remains an important site for hiking, mountain-biking, trail-running, rock climbing, snow shoeing and cross-country skiing. The runoff from the snow it gathers each year feeds an important network of lakes and rivers. Key places of beauty include Witchcraft Lake and Ammonite Falls. Wildlife remains abundant and is an integral part of the charm. Black bears are rare but not unheard of, so it's always important to be prepared (Bear bells, bangers, and spray are all helpful deterrents).

One trail up the mountain begins behind Westwood Lake. Another point of access is Witchcraft Lake. The Witchcraft route is much shorter but quite a bit steeper.

Explore: Mythical Newcastle

shoes

Haunted and saturated with history, Newcastle Island remains one of the most fascinating places to camp or visit. With its beautiful forests and unique coastline, Newcastle Island is a Marine Provincial Park with hundreds of stories to tell.

First home to the Snuneymuxw First Nations people, Europeans were initially attracted to Newcastle's rich coal deposits in the mid 1800's. The mining eventually grew so extensive that a shaft was built beneath the narrow channel that separates Newcastle from Vancouver Island.

The mining also revealed the superior quality of the sandstone rock on Newcastle Island and a quarry was soon built. Old mounds of discarded sandstone remain a unique attraction upon Newcastle Island.

Japanese influence in the early 1900's lead to the establishment of fish salteries, and a shipbuilding industry. With the beginning of the Second World War, these two industries were forcibly abandoned as the Japanese owners and workers were sent to labour camps in the interior.

During the 1920's Newcastle Island also became a popular picnic destination for boatloads of tourists from Vancouver. The dancing pavilion, bath house and docks from this time still remain in use today.

Known as the 'jewel of the harbour', the Snuneymuxw First Nations people work to preserve the island and their continuing part in its history. As nature buries the past, the mystique of the island only grows.

At Alberni Outpost, it is our pleasure to partner with Snuneymuxw First Nations in order to offer you, your family, and your friends, a historical big canoe tour of New Castle Island. Come join us for a paddle, and experiance historical Newcastle first hand!

Now go play outside.

What's New: Advanced Elements Inflatable Kayaks
AdvancedElements
The perfect solution for the no-fuss, go-anywhere customer. Advanced Elements Inflatable kayaks use innovative technology to rival the professional performance of high-end hard frame kayaks.

The AdvancedFrame™ Kayaks are a hybrid of a folding frame kayak, and an inflatable kayak. Its bow slices through water like a knife and rivals the tracking of hard-shell kayaks. The stern acts as a skeg increasing the tracking performance.

The DragonFly™ kayaks are durable and lightweight. They have built-in rigid forms that increase the performance once it is fully inflated.

You can take these inflatables anywhere in the world, and no roof rack is needed! Keep it in the trunk of your car, and paddle whenever you want. Or pack it into a remote wilderness area and paddle where no one has paddled before. Simply inflate with a foot pump and hit the water in minutes.

SanukSharmaWhat's Neat: Sanuks
