NEWS from  the 'POST class
Dear Reader:

Vancouver Island is definitely the seat of paradise. The rugged climate and varied weather systems have made us one of the top places in the world for adventure seekers. From snowshoeing to dragon boating, to fixing a sail to the deck of your kayak, Vancouver Island has hundreds of exciting ways to push traditional sports to the next level.

And we're not done yet. Alberni Outpost is about much more than kayaking. We rent and sell equipment for trail-running, paddle boarding, surfing and hiking... for a start.

With a backyard mountain and the sea washing up over our doorstep, it's not hard to see why so many are calling us:

'the most beautiful place on earth'.

Historic Paddling: Big Canoes

Central to the Snuneymuxw First Nation Peoples is the craft and tradition of cedar dugout canoes. Canoe carving remains core to the culture of the Snuneymuxw nation and its surrounding native communities.

Both the creation and the use of the canoe unites families, connecting them with their traditional roots. While once used to transport warriors, big canoes (also known as war canoes) have now become a source of union, teamwork and healing for many cultures around the world.

A big canoe traditionally holds 15 paddlers including one coxswain, for steering. They are designed with a tall swooping bow and the hull is often caved with pictures of powerful animals. Big canoe racing is now a popular team sport. While culture may change around us, the exhilarating feeling of working together in a big canoe to reach your goal will always remain.

If you'd like to experience more of this unique facet of First Nations culture, feel free to contact us! Come explore the cultural history of Newcastle Island as we paddle together in the waters of Nanaimo harbor in a big canoe. You'll also enjoy a fully prepared Salmon BBQ and get to listen to a Snuneymuxw Elder tell stories describing the history and culture of the Coast Salish peoples.

What's New: KIDS' STUFF!

Sunday Hat KidsYour kids need to be as prepared for outdoor adventures as you do. That's why at Alberni Outpost we've been working hard to stock gear to help your kids spend less time in front of the computer and more time in the great outdoors.

For the family that plays together, we've got Keen Kids hikers and water sandals, as well as a great selection of Teva mush flip-flops. To keep your kids happy even when the rain and wind come, checkout our rain gear and snuggly fleeces by Sierra Designs.

When the sun shines, protect your children with Sunday Afternoon Hats. These hats are cute and breezy with a built-in UPF rating of 50.

When it's time for them to carry a load, our kid-specific Deuter backpacks are some of the best in the industry. Until then, feel confident carrying your child in Deuter's Kid Comfort carriers, with extra padding for comfort and adjustable 5-point safety harness system.

gogo exWhat's New: Award-winning Nemo Tents!

With some of the most innovative technology on the market, Nemo tents are changing the way you think about backpacking. Take Nemo's Gogo Ex tent for instance. This remarkable one-man tent weighs only 2.5 pounds and packs to about the size of a football. The secret? No poles.

With a support structure 2X stranger than regular tent poles, the Gogo uses a patented air tube with a built in pump, easily inflated in seconds. Because there's nothing rigid in the tent, it's easy to stuff into those odd pockets at the bottom of a gear bag, in the hatch of your kayak or on the back of a motorcycle!

What's Happening: Grand Opening in Courtenay!
