NEWS from  the 'POST
Dear Reader:

November seems to be an in-between month; in-between Halloween and Christmas, in-between fall and winter. Consider it a blessing; allow your pace to slow just a fraction. In-between times are perfect for reflection and self-evaluation.

Don't worry; you'll be busy soon enough. In the meantime, try walking to work. Notice the rush of clouds overhead and the swirl of leaves around your ankles. Treasure the moment: a special in-between time just for you.
The Journey: Tips for Every Traveler Travel
Uncertainty is the backbone of adventure, whether you like it or not. When we leave the places we know and love, and step into an unfamiliar world, the result is both uncomfortable and exhilarating. Adventure is the taste of uncertainty, the question of what if. It is the discovery of new worlds. Like Bilbo Baggins, when we are tested with the unfamiliar and learn to adapt that is when we become the conquering heroes of our own story.

Also like Bilbo Baggins, we are allowed to choose our tools to assist us along the way. A good pair of socks may not be a magical ring, but they may make all the difference between blistering disappointment and the peak of success.

Lesson number one: the best tools are the ones that are versatile

When packing clothes, pick comfortable, mix-and-match neutral colors that can be easily dressed up with a few accessories. Leave the jeans behind. Lightweight synthetics or merino wool fabrics are warm and moisture wicking. They are also quick-dry and may have anti-bacterial properties. This means you can bring half as many clothes and hand wash them. You can go for weeks with two pairs of durable quick-dry underwear.

A small laundry/ repair kit should include:

A lightweight non-slip clothes line
Safety pins
Detergent
Plug
Needle and thread
shoes
Lesson number two: You don't need as many toiletries as you think

Many creams and shampoos are provided in hotels or are easily purchased. Use travel-sized containers and consider eco-friendly detergents and shampoos. A small quick-dry, ultra absorbent towel comes in handy. (You can dry your clothes by wringing them out inside the towel).

Lesson Number three: Keep it straight

Organization saves you endless worry and the occasional panic attacks. Luggage organizers keep everything compact and give you a place to stuff wet clothes. Have a place for your important papers. Keep money and documents in a hidden travel pouch. Small daypacks are a must.

Luggage locks are also important. If you're backpacking, bring a travel cover to discourage pickpockets.

Lesson number four: Stay healthy

Nothing will ruin a trip faster than poor health. Keep your medications handy and your shots up to date. Remember to purchase travel insurance. A small first-aid kit can keep minor injuries from developing into big problems. Be sure to include:

antiseptic wipes, spray or cream
non-stick dressings
blister plasters/ moleskin
bandages
surgical tape
scissors (for cutting tape, plasters and bandages)
safety pins (for securing bandages)
tweezers (for removing objects such as splinters)
Water purification tablets

Good footwear is essential. Make sure your shoes give you enough support for all the ground you'll be covering. Also remember to bring a pair of sandals. Many diseases can transfer through the soles of your feet. Always wear sandals in public showers and on beaches.

A lightweight rain jacket is also very handy.

bikeLesson five: Don't panic!

Something will probably go wrong. After all, what is a good story without a few complications along the way? The key is to remain flexible and enjoy the strange new moment circumstance has handed you.

You've missed the train in Munich? Explore the cobbled streets, or check out a local cafe. Your need is your opportunity to make new friends. Even if you don't speak the language, a smile goes a long way. (Smiling also releases endorphins that make you feel better).

Remember, it's the unexpected detours that often lead us to a hidden grove or a magical castle. Whatever your adventure, the uncertain times are the moments you will remember the best.

Have some fun,
go play outside.
