NEWS from  the 'POST
Dear Reader:

The smell of BBQ has changed to the smoky scent of hearth fires. Leaves crackle and spin about your ankles while the morning air nips at your nose with the promise of colder days to come. September is finally here.

Each season of life is full of its own potential, and fall is no exception. As work and school schedules fill our lives with busyness, take time for a brisk walk and be sure to notice the modest beauty that surrounds you.

Placid lakes reflect a wash of new colours. Canadian geese climb in tight formation and noisily announce their departure. Even the coming rainy season has something to give; bringing to us a sense of tranquility, renewal and rest.

Are You Ready? CRACK

Super, natural, British Columbia. Stunning scenery, thriving wildlife, and easy access to pristine wilderness is building our province's reputation as one of the most beautiful places to live in the world. Rugged and awe inspiring, our abundance of mountainous scenery does however come with some inherent risks.

Several of the mountains that we know and love are actually dormant volcanoes, connected to a 40,000 km ring of oceanic trenches, volcanic arcs, and volcanic belts in the basin of the Pacific Ocean. This formation is known as the 'Ring of Fire', and it is the cause of about 90% of the world's earthquakes.

The last major earthquake to affect Vancouver Island happened in August of 1949. It registered a magnitude of 8.1 and is Canada`s largest historical quake. While most are too small to be felt, southwestern BC experiences about 300 earthquakes a year. This is due to the movement of the Juan de Fuca plate (located about 40 km beneath Victoria) sliding under the North America plate (about 70 km beneath Vancouver). These two plates are currently locked together and the consequential strain causes the many small tremors. There is good evidence that sometime in the future these plates will snap loose generating a huge offshore "subduction" (downward moving) earthquake.

A little knowledge may go a long way towards surviving a major earthquake. Many schools have implemented an excellent earthquake preparedness program, and it is wise to extend these practices into your home. The Ministry of Public Safety recommends that individuals and families be prepared to survive for at least 72 hours afterwards without help. A basic home earthquake kit should include:
canned

A first aid kit and instruction booklet.

Shelter- a plastic tarp, a small tent, emergency ("space") blankets, or even some large garbage bags.

Water- at least four litres of water per person, per day, in tight-lidded non-breakable containers. That's at least 12 litres per person for a three-day supply.

A supply of water purification tablets. Water also can be made safe to drink by using four drops of liquid household bleach in 41/2 litres of clear water or 10 drops in 41/2 litres of cloudy water. Replace stored tap water at least every six months.

If the water is still running, fill a bathtub and other containers. Remember, there's water available too in a hot water tank and toilet reservoir.

Food- keep a supply of non-perishable food handy, such as canned and dehydrated food, dried fruit and canned juices. Rotate periodically to keep them fresh. Remember to pack a manual can opener.
firstaidkit
Flashlight and spare batteries. Keep the flashlight near your bed. Batteries should be separate in your kit.

Battery AM/FM radio and spare batteries, stored separately in waterproof bags.

Essential medication and supplies for infants, elderly persons and those with special needs. Keep at least a one-week supply in your emergency kit. Include copies of prescriptions for your medicine and glasses.

Personal toiletry items- toilet tissue, soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, etc.

Class ABC fire extinguisher. Keep it in a handy location in your home, after testing according to directions.

Wrench (crescent or pipe) to turn off natural gas. Keep it in a handy place or in your emergency kit.

Shoes- heavy enough to protect you from broken glass and other debris. Keep them handy, wherever you are.

You may have some of these basic emergency items already. The key is to make sure they are organized, easy to find and easy to carry (in a suitcase with wheels or in a backpack) in case you need to evacuate your home.
