Kayaking Basics: An Introduction
Vancouver Island is ideal for the ancient sport of ocean kayaking. Secluded bays, ancient rock formations and abundant wild life make 'getting away from it all' easier than ever. Like any new sport however, beginners often face an array of challenging and intimidating questions. This article seeks to provide you with a bit of basic knowledge to help you get out onto the water safely, and discover the hidden joys of an ocean paddle. Before you begin, it is essential to honestly assess your skill level. Are you comfortable exiting your kayak if you tip over (wet-water exit)? Do you know how to get back in (self-rescue)? Can you help someone else get into his or her boat (assisted rescue)? If the answer to any of these questions are no, don't worry! There are stable, calm water boats that any beginner can be comfortable in. It is important to note that these boats are designed for protected bays, inlets and lakes and are not designed for rougher water. It's also a good idea to paddle with a partner. Here at Alberni Outpost we offer guided tours and courses for all skill levels. For more information you can visit our website, albernioutpost.com, or simply give us a call! We'd love to answer your questions. Whether you have been ocean kayaking for years, or are considering trying it out for the first time, you are required by law to carry certain safety items. These include a signalling device (a whistle), a bailer, buoyant heaving line (at least 50 ft.) and of course, a Personal Flotation Device. You also are required to use navigation lights if you are paddling in low-visibility conditions. Sunsets and sunrises are some of the best times to paddle, but you need to remember that you are virtually invisible to larger crafts. You don't want to become a speed bump! In addition, we recommend the use of a paddle float as a rescue device to help you get back into your kayak. A paddle float is a device that attaches to the blade of your paddle so you can create an outrigger pontoon (a buoyant brace) to help you scramble back into your kayak. Finally, always be aware of your environment. Check tides, currents and weather reports before you go and plan your trip accordingly. Let someone know where you're headed and give them a route plan and the time you expect to return. For longer trips, a GPS unit can be very handy. Ocean kayaking opens doors into an untouched and pristine environment. It is not uncommon to be followed by a friendly seal, catch a racoon washing its dinner, or to spot a doe coming to the beach to lick the salt off the rocks. It is a soothing, meditative experience that draws you closer to the nature and gives you a sense of freedom from a busy and tumultuous world. Get away from it all, go play outside.

Bogs are odour resistant and they have non-slip, non-marking outsoles. These aren't your granny's rubber boots!
Even better, these boots come in a selection of patterns in keeping with the current trend of cute boots. You can choose a classic or funky look and know that you're ready for whatever weather this spring might bring. |
What's New: Durability and comfort, Exofficio Travel Underwear!
20 years ago, Exofficio recognized a need for comfortable travel gear that was good enough for fancy hotels and restaurants but was functional as well. They were the first major company to produce high performance convertible gear, and we are now excited to introduce to you their "Give-N-Go" underwear line.
"Give-N-Go" is made of odor resistant super-fine mesh. The fabric is lightweight and quick-drying. It is also breathable and has a subtile stretch to it to improve fit and retain shape. Seasoned travelers carry only one or two pairs of Exofficio underwear. Wash it at night and it's dry in the morning! |
