| Anyone Interested ? |
The Tuscarawas County Chamber of Commerce has thought about hosting a Tip Club for our members. A tip club is limited to one person from each industry and it is a way to get ideas, new contacts, leads, and network. Tip Clubs are all about networking. A group of men and women in business meet once a week/month, either for breakfast or for lunch, and talk. Sometimes there are presentations. Sometimes not. But always they talk. About their businesses. About the business climate. About ways to expand their businesses.
And the principal way they help each other expand is by leads (tips). Tip Club members try to trade with each other. And they refer other people to other members. Tip Clubs work! If this sounds like something you would like to attend then please e-mail Jill. If I get 10 to 15 folks/businesses interested then I will get the first one scheduled for the end of April.

The Chamber will be participating in a used printer cartridge and cell phone collection program. We are one of the many organizations actively collecting empty inkjet and laser printer cartridges as well as used cell phones from within our business community.

"Healthy Tusc 1st Annual Winter Hike a Success!"
|
NEW PHILADELPHIA - Despite having over a foot of snow on the ground and flurries coming down, nearly 400 area residents showed up Saturday, February 13th to take advantage of Healthy Tusc's 1st Annual Winter Hike. The Winter Hike was held at Historic Schoenbrunn Village from 11 AM - 1 PM and was co-sponsored by this year's Leadership Tusc class. The route, tramped down Friday afternoon by members of Healthy Tusc lead organizations, started at the museum and wound it way up past the cemetery around the outer perimeter of the village to the church and headed back toward the museum. Those in attendance were entertained by two singing groups located in the church and school buildings. Claymont High School's Show Choir performed various songs from their new repertoire and a Very Large Quartet (VLQ) performed songs including crowd favorites "Heart of My Heart" and "Side by Side" in the church. Other activities included in the day's events were a healthy snack demonstration for kids sponsored by Leadership Tusc's current class, provided by Chris Kendle, RD, LD from the Tuscarawas County OSU Extension Office. Participants were served bean soup and cornbread after completing the hike, they had the opportunity to sign up for door prizes and kids were provided with goodie bags to take home. "We started to second guess ourselves with the sheer volume of snow on the ground; we honestly considered rescheduling," stated Vickie Ionno, Director of Nursing, Tuscarawas County Health Department. "But then we reminded ourselves that our goal was to show people they could get out during the winter months to exercise and it could be fun. I think we accomplished that goal." "It was a great day!" exclaimed Tiffany Poland, Marketing Director for Twin City Hospital. "It was wonderful to see families out exercising together. Some families had young kids on sleds, pulling them along on behind them as they hiked. Others brought their family dog to walk with them. We are looking forward to next year and making it even better." Healthy Tusc is a task force, made up of area non-profit organizations, that is working to improve the health and wellness of Tuscarawas County residents through programming, community awareness and advocacy aimed at reducing obesity. The lead agencies in this group are the Tuscarawas County Health Department, Tuscarawas County YMCA, Tuscarawas County United Way, Twin City Hospital and Union Hospital.

For more information about the Healthy Tusc Task Force, contact Tiffany Poland at (740) 922-7471 or email at tpoland@twincityhospital.org or contact Pam Dummermuth at (330) 602-0779 or email at pamelad@unionhospital.org.

SBA Recovery Lending Extended Through April 30 Administrator Mills urges longer-term extension for successful programs WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama signed on Friday legislation extending through April the U.S. Small Business Administration's ability to provide enhancements in its two largest small business loan programs. The enhancements, first made available under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, include a higher guarantee on some SBA-backed loans and fee relief. The SBA estimates the $40 million extension will support about $1.4 billion in small business lending. "Thousands of small businesses across the country have taken advantage of these Recovery loan enhancements to get the capital they need during these tough economic times," said SBA Administrator Karen Mills. "The increased guarantee and reduced fees on SBA loans helped put more than $23 billion into the hands of small business owners and brought more than 1,100 lenders back to SBA loan programs. As a result, average weekly loan approvals by SBA have climbed by 86 percent compared to the weekly average before passage of the Recovery Act. These programs have been successful in helping jump-start our economy, which is why we will continue to work with Congress on a longer extension of the increased guarantee and reduced fees. "Additionally, we continue to encourage the Congress to act on other proposals the President has put forward, including higher SBA loan limits and refinancing for commercial property mortgages to help thousands of small businesses avoid potential foreclosure. Small businesses need the changes the President has called for to ensure that they have the tools to drive economic growth and create jobs in communities all across the country." As part of the Recovery Act enacted on Feb. 17, 2009, SBA received $730 million to help small businesses, including $375 million to increase the SBA guarantee on 7(a) loans to 90 percent and to waive borrower fees on most 7(a) and 504 loans. The funds for these programs were exhausted on Nov. 23, 2009, and an additional $125 million was provided in December. Those funds were exhausted in late February, 2010, and an additional $60 million was provided subsequently. That funding was exhausted late Friday. Under the new extension SBA may continue to waive loan fees and provide higher guarantee levels on 7(a) loans through April, 30, 2010, or until the funds provided under the bill are exhausted. When the funds provided for March were exhausted, SBA reactivated the Recovery Loan Queue, as occurred in November and again in February, to cover the brief period of time before the funds from the extension become available, which should be within a few days. Eligible small business loan applicants, in consultation with their lenders, may choose to be placed in the queue for possible approval of a Recovery Act loan when funding becomes available. For non-Recovery Act 7(a) or 504 loans already funded during the Recovery Loan Queue period, this extension does not provide a retroactive guarantee or fee relief. Loans that were funded under non-Recovery Act terms cannot be canceled and resubmitted to take advantage of the Recovery Act extension provisions. This extension does not affect other SBA Recovery Act programs, including the America's Recovery Capital (ARC) loan program or the agency's microloans. Recovery Act funding still remains available for both of those programs.
