Dr. Gold's Message
 Jeffrey D. Gold, MD

I'd like to share with you a lesson I've learned the hard way about the hazards of the sun.  I recently had to have two skin cancers removed from my scalp.  I haven't been a sun worshipper for years and years.  But the damage was done when I was younger and our whole group of friends would go to the beach and coat our bodies with a baby oil/iodine mixture and then bake all day.  I had a thick head of hair in those days, but the cancer occurred anyway many years after the initial exposure period.

If you plan to be out in the sun, PLEASE USE SUNBLOCK!  I recommend at least SPF 30 and you should re-apply every couple of hours.

The FDA recently gave very high marks to SkinMedica's Solar Protection products. (Click here for more information)
Have a great and a safe summer!

Everything You Want to Know About Omega 3 and Healthy Aging
Cold Water Fish
Essential fatty acids are found in fish and certain vegetable oils.  Such oils play a major role in many systems within the body.  The word "essential" means compounds our bodies cannot produce but we require them in order to thrive.

The important components of these oils are Omega 3's.  These products affect various body systems because they have anti-inflammatory, and anti-oxidant properties.  Inflammation plays a major role in disease and in the aging process.  As we go through life, biologic processes in our bodies produce free radicals which cause premature aging of various organ systems.  Anti-oxidants track down and destroy free radicals.  Omega 3's provide those anti-inflammatories and anti-oxidants.

They are known to reduce cholesterol; therefore they are beneficial to the cardiovascular system.  For years, studies have shown that omega 3's are important in maintaining and improving brain function.  My main reason for bringing omega 3's to your attention, however, is the importance of these compounds in the prevention and treatment of skin disorders and because of their anti-inflammatory properties in maintaining healthy skin.

Omega 3 finds a role of special importance in my practice because of its variety of applications.  An ophthalmology patient of mine, for example, who might be taking fish or flax seed oil to improve his/her tear production in the treatment of dry eye, will also experience healthier skin and, as a bonus, lower cholesterol.

The essential fattty acids contained in these oils are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).  Probably the best source of these is from cold water fish, particularly those found in the wild.  Mercury contamination is no longer a big worry because of better regulation, however, it appears that wild caught fish is preferable.

Today, I make available to my patients Theratears Nutrition, which has both fish and flax seed oil as its source of omega 3. The recommended dose is 3 capsules in the morning.  (Click here for more information on Theratears Nutrition).
