HDMen Profile: Cycling
It's hard to describe the feeling you have when you combine the adrenaline rush of cycling with the painted landscape of the Tennessee countryside.
As co-leaders of HD Men Cycling, David Vinson and Michael Julius aim to create interesting and challenging ride routes that appeal to both aggressive and moderate intensity cyclists. We meet at a single location and begin the ride together. Then, depending on the ride route, David leads those that want the steepest hills and longest distance while Michael opts for the rolling hills and a distance of about 25 miles. The rides converge at a coffee house or restaurant where we can all enjoy a small meal together. During this time of connection David leads us in a short life lesson called the Feed Zone that links issues in cycling to issues men deal with in everyday life. In two hours together we will feed your body, your mind and your soul.
David Vinson (jaxvinson@aol.com) played running back for an SEC football program (not UT), leads spin classes at Prairie Life and rides his bike year round. He has competed in CAT 4 race competitions and has ridden in several century events (100 miles or more). David is married with small children (boys and girls).
Michael Julius ( mjulius@wmed.org) is a recreational cyclist that rides spring to fall approximately 3 times a week. He combines weight training with cycling in an effort to stay fit to keep up with his wife and three daughters. David and Michael both work professionally in healthcare.
HD Men Cycling has big plans for the coming season. We are planning to host a spring tune up event at Allante' Bike Shop in Brentwood on March 1st from 8:30 a.m. until 10 a.m. Check the website for additional details. At this gathering we will discuss ride routes, charity rides, tips for buying or upgrading your bike, designing an HD Men team jersey and general tips for giving your bike a spring tune-up. You will also have a chance to tour the store and check out all of the cool new technology and accessories.
If you already have a few guys that you like to ride with, bring them along. If you used to run and feel like it's time to give the knees a rest, come along. If you used to be athletic and find yourself out of shape, find a bike and come along. The open roads of Tennessee are calling! |

Impact Profile: Jeff Montgomery
I am helping create a Service Projects group for HDMen.
My wife, Sarah, and I have three adopted children from Ukraine. Our church body was so supportive through the adoption process and continues to be so loving toward our kids.
Recently a new desire has been growing inside me to go beyond the church walls and engage our community. Many times I have felt a "prompting" to serve in some way or show a random act of kindness to a neighbor or total stranger. There is such joy and satisfaction when I follow in obedience, yet regret when I miss those opportunities. Some memorable times in our former home group happened when we were serving one another. Whether it was spending time with families at Vanderbilt Hospital's trauma waiting room or loading up groceries in a tractor-trailer headed to the gulf coast for Katrina victims, we all felt our faith in action. There are so many ways to serve others and it is my hope that this group can "stretch" us out of our comfort zones and into a deeper walk of faith.
We're planning a March project so if rolling up your sleeves and getting your hands dirty starts your blood pumping, let me know. |
