When Will the Gardens Open?

by Kirk Jones

We have all been enjoying the unseasonably warm weather and many people have asked me "When can I start gardening?"  Unless you have a perennial plot, the gardens need to first be tilled and then staked out before you can begin.  Kevin Ernst, who does our tilling, hopes to begin this week.  He said that because the tilling in the fall was done on still wet soil, he would prefer to have the gardens on the dry side before tilling this spring.

Once the gardens are tilled, they still need to be staked out (putting in labelled stakes on the corners of the plots) before people can begin.  You site coordinator will let you know when that has been completed, but you can get in touch with me if you don't hear or are confused.

This is exactly the kind of spring when it is nice to have a garden that is tilled only in the fall, and the gardeners at West Park and Hunt Park decided to skip spring tilling this year.  We will keep you posted on how it goes, but t
hings look promising so far.  Hunt's site coordinator, Abigail Murray, sent me a message on March 19th that the garden had already been staked out and was now open.  This is no doubt a record for a Project Grow annual site!

West Park was staked out the following weekend, but gardeners there are not starting quite yet because they plan on having a huge amount of compost and soil hauled in.  They still hope to get started by late April.

Pre-Order for the Plant Sale

Time is running out if you'd like to advance order your plants for the plant sale!  We are asking that you get your orders in by April 21st, 2 weeks before the pickup.  Every year, some gardeners at our plant sale find that their favorite choices have already sold out by the time they can make it to the sale. Last year gardeners for the first time were able to order plants from our plant sale ahead of time to be sure they get what they want.  This option was very popular, so we are doing it again.   The pick-up dates are a week before the sale on Saturday May 5th and Sunday May 6th between the hours of 10am to 1pm at 1518 Shadford. To read all about the plants offered, click on the online list.  For all the details on how to pre-order, please click here

2012 New Gardener Shindig - April 15th - 11:30am-2:30pm

Project Grow will be hosting a get together shindig for new gardeners on April 15, 2012 from 11:30 AM - 2:30 PM at the Leslie Science Center's Nature House. (1831 Traver Rd, Ann Arbor, MI)

All gardeners are encouraged to attend, but the focus of the event will be on introducing new gardeners to community gardening, organic gardening practices, plus volunteer opportunities with Project Grow.

Come for lunch and meet your site coordinator and fellow gardeners. Learn all you'll need to know to enjoy being a member of Project Grow to it's fullest!

We were a little overwhelmed because last year's shindig was unexpectedly popular with about 60 people attending.  If you expect to attend, please RSVP so we can be prepared!

Earth Day Celebration at LSNC April 22nd 12pm-4pm

Celebrate the earth with Ann Arbor's annual Earth Day Festival, this year hosted at LSNC and organized by local environmental organizations. Explore and participate in the variety of hands on activities and demonstrations while listening to live earth friendly music.  All are welcomed to come dressed as their favorite plant or animal to join the all species parade. Pre-registration is not required.

Project Grow is proud to be a part of the Earth Day Celebration at The Leslie Science and Nature Center! We will be showing off our gardens, and talking about our new Discovery Garden Project to revitalize them.

New Class Listings!

Project Grow has finalized plans for several more classes for the months of April and May, 2012, that are exciting as well as useful to gardeners. Read the descriptions below and start signing up via our website. Some of them have class size limitations, so don't dawdle! Finally, note that any handout materials will be emailed to you prior to the class, so that you can download them yourself.

1. Square Foot Gardening: Sunday, April 29, from 10am-1pm, at the Leslie House and Discovery Garden, at the Leslie Science and Nature Center, 1831 Traver Rd., Ann Arbor, 48105.

If you have a limited garden space but unlimited dreams of growing vegetables and flowers, come to this workshop on square foot gardening to learn how to make them a reality. This established method of gardening, led by certified Square Foot Gardening instructor, James Lee, will show you how to set up your bed and to garden without weeds or the need for chemical fertilizers! Class will be held rain or shine; come dressed for the weather and to work outside. Maximum class size: 20. Fee: $10.00 per person, $15.00 per couple. Pre-registration and payment required.

2. Composting in a Community Garden Plot: Saturday, May 5, from 10am- noon, at the Nature House, Leslie Science and Nature Center, 1831 Traver Rd., Ann Arbor, MI, 48105.

This first of two composting classes will teach you different methods of hot and cold composting that are applicable in a community garden plot, backyard garden, and even in your kitchen! Master Composters, Joet Reoma and Jesse Raudenbush, will lead the lecture as well as a tour of Project Grow's Compost Education Center. No fee, but registration is required.

3. Wild Crafting: Sunday, May 13, 2:00pm-4:00pm, at the Leslie Science and Nature Center Woods, 1831 Traver Rd.,Ann Arbor, 48105.

Join holistic health practitioner and herbalist, Diane Feldt, for a slow stroll through the Black Pond Woods of the Leslie Science Center, to identify local medicinal and edible wild plants. Linda Diane has taught many courses locally on wild local foods and has authored several books on the subject. More information can be found on her website, www.lindadianefeldt.com. This class will be held rain or shine; come dressed for the weather and walking. Meet in the parking lot at LSNC. Class size limited to 20. Fee: $10.00 per person or a family of 2. This second of two composting workshops focuses on the science of vermiculture, how to start a worm composting bin, and the benefits of worm castings in your garden. Led by Jesse Raudenbush, a third generation vermiculturist at Starr Valley Farms, students will also take home a pound of red wrigglers, a worm composting bin, and a book on vermiculture.   Fee: $35.00 per person. Pre-registration and payment required.

5. . Make Your Own Composter!: Saturday, May 26, 2pm-4pm, on the lawn of the Nature House, Leslie Science and Nature Center, 1831 Traver Rd., Ann Arbor, 48105.

This is a fundraiser for The Discovery Garden Project. Please visit dgp.projectgrowgardens.org to learn more.

Other Classes in the Works

Project Grow is also working on other classes to present to the gardeners and environmentalists of Ann Arbor. A detail or two are not resolved yet on these, so they cannot be confirmed. However, we find them so exciting that we think you should hear of them. As soon as all the nuts and bolts are in place, we will shoot them on to the website, as well as publicize them in next month's newsletter. So keep a look out for them in upcoming bulletins!

Click here to read previews on some of the great new classes we are working on including mushroom cultivation, Hugelculture, Aquaponics and visits to the Chinese grocery store!

2012 Registration

Project Grow has been registering people for 2012 since the last few days of 2011.  This year we spread out the "spring rush" by asking returning gardeners to reapply earlier and by turning around applications as fast as possible. At last count we've received over 300 applications and nearly all are already confirmed.  New applicants can expect to be confirmed the same day their application and payment are complete if their desired site still has open spaces.  If the site is full, Kirk will contact them and see if they can make do with another site.

For those who can't garden at another site or want to move next year, we are maintaining a wait list for all of Project Grow this year.  People on the wait list will be notified if a cancellation at their desired site opens a space for them.  If that doesn't happen, we will notify them the first day that we start accepting applications for 2013 so they can quickly apply and hopefully get a plot in one of our high-demand sites.

Special thanks everyone who responded to the e-mail and letter reminders and registered early.  It has made the entire process much easier all around.  Here is hoping that 2012 will be everyone's best gardening year ever!
