Winter Potluck

Project Grow will be holding a Winter potluck for all our members and friends on Sunday February 27th from 5-7pm.  Our friend and fellow gardener, Alice Telesnitsky, has again kindly offered to host the potluck at her house at  912 Pauline Blvd. Ann Arbor, MI.

Please bring a dish to share (store-bought is fine if you're busy!)

New Website

If you have not visited our website lately, click here to take a look.  This new website was designed to hopefullly convey more information, but also to be easier to maintain.  The previous website required installation of a special software package and sometimes even knowledge of html to maintain.  This made us dependent upon trained volunteers to make even simple changes.  The new website can be easily modified by anyone comfortable enough with computers to use web-based editing software (like Constant Contact, the program used to generate this newsletter).

We want to add more pictures to go along with the individual garden sites, so if you have any pictures, please send them to kirk@GoodScentsGardens.com and we will try to get them up on the website!

2011 Registration has Begun

In addition to a new website, Project Grow's online registration system has also been completely re-done.  The new forms are hopefully simpler than in the past and less prone to errors.  For example, in the past applicants selected the garden site they wanted by putting a check next to the site name in a list which showed all the site names.  It was very easy to accidentally put the check next to the wrong garden site, which caused numerous irritating errors (why have I been confirmed for space at County Farm when I applied for a garden at Clague?).  In the new form, applicants choose the garden site from a drop down list.  They can only choose one site and it is immediately obvious to the applicant if they accidentally make the wrong choice.

Project Grow also sent invoices to everyone who gardened last year reminding them to register.  One unexpected bonus of this is in some cases we now know that a gardener is not returning before the March 15th deadline when they must reapply for their garden.  This allows our Managing Director to re-assign the plot before March 15th.

Of course, nothing is perfect, especially a new computer system.  If you have problems using the new forms or see goofs in the website, we would really like to hear about it so we can correct the problem!

Organic Gardening Classes

If you are interested in learning more about organic gardening, there are two series of classes that might be of help to you, a more in-depth series at Washtenaw Community College and a more broad-view one via Grow's own classes.

Project Grow Organic Seeds on Sale

Project Grow will be selling organically grown heirloom tomato seeds at the People's Food Coop, starting in February.  We have over 200 varieties in stock, but only 40 will be on sale.  They are some of  the best ones (winners of past tomato tastings for example), so they should be checked out before buying seeds commercially.  If someone has a particular variety that they would like to grow, they can consult Marcella Trautmann at marcella@projectgrowgardens.org to see if she has it.  The price per packet of at least 25 seeds  is $2.50, and there is no postage and handling charge for local deliveries.
