Living Your Soul's Purpose
Living Your Soul's Purpose book answers the questions:
· Why am I here? · Who am I to be with? · What is my ideal career? · How am I to take care of myself? · Why was I born into my family? · How am I to serve my community and the world?
Clear the energy blocks to discovering your soul's purpose-why you are on this planet now.
You can find my own personal story on page 256. ~ Kim

Greetings!
Well, it has been one HOT week! I hope you have found ways to stay cool. Sunday is looking to be hot and possible thunderstorms in the afternoon. It could be a fun, interesting day for our Lavender Womyn anniversary event. The trees help to shade part of our yard, and we'll attempt to put up a canopy to create some more shade. Our downstairs stays pretty cool, so the kids can hang out in there and play if it's too hot for them outside. And, we can always turn on the sprinkler to cool people down. :) At any rate, I hope you all will come out and celebrate LW's 5th year.
PLEASE NOTE: There will be NO Newsletter on August 23rd or August 30th.

Two Portland Bands
Rose City Gay Freedom Band
Since forming in 1990, Rose City Gay Freedom Band has been a place for GLBTQ musicians and friends to play, perform, and participate in Portland's musical community. Today, RCGFB is comprised of a symphonic wind ensemble, a sixteen-piece swing band (Rose City Swing), a marching band, and several smaller performing groups.
Join the Band -- The Rose City Gay Freedom Band welcomes anyone who plays an instrument to consider joining. While many members are accomplished musicians, many new members had not played since high school or college. Visit their web site at: http://www.rcgfb.org/index.php
Rose City SwingRose City Swing, a traditional 16-piece swing band and sub-group of RCGFB, was formed in 1993. A majority of performances are benefits and privately paid functions, such as fundraisers and weddings. Rose City Swing produces two dances per year that are open to the public.
Private Hiring -- Rose City Swing can be hired for special, private, and community events. We may be able to form other small ensembles to meet your needs. Some of our musicians have also performed solo in the area. To find out more email rosecityswing@rcgfb.org or visit their web site at: http://rcgfb.org/swing/swing.php |

We all had a wonderful time of great food and conversation at Strega last Saturday. The next gathering has been planned, and will be on Saturday September 6th at Aqua in Corvallis. I have decided to coordinate this event with Rhapsody in the Vineyard, the annual wine tasting event in downtown Corvallis. For those who are interested, the wine tasting begins at 4 pm with a $5.00 fee for a glass and minimal fee for each tasting and appetizers at each participating business. It is a fun event and good way to support the local community. After a bit of wine tasting, we can meander over to Aqua for dinner. The details:

VICTORY! Domestic Partnerships Secured!
In a unanimous decision issued last Thursday, a three-judge panel of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed the lower court's decision dismissing our opponent's claims in the Lemons v. Bradbury case. Thanks to your courage and unwavering support, Oregon's domestic partnership law is secure. There will be no referendum on the ballot this November.
The decision marks the end of more than a year's work to secure the victories we won in the 2007 legislature. For nearly a year, we have organized support in our communities and spoken out about the real impact of Oregon's nondiscrimination and domestic partnership laws. We have held vigils, rallies, press conferences and celebrations. We have said all along that we believed in the fundamental fairness of Oregonians and we put our trust in the rule of law.
We celebrate one more step forward on the road to equality. Click Here to read more...

Why We Think the Way We Do
A book explains female intuition, long phone calls, love at first sight.
Do men and women think alike? Well, that's a no-brainer: Of course not. Although 99 percent of our genes are the same, that 1 percent makes all the difference, as neurologist Louann Brizendine explains in her elegant new book, The Female Brain.
A few nuggets:
Although male brains are larger by about 9 percent, women have the same number of brain cells packed more densely into a smaller skull.
A baby girl's skills in eye contact and face studying improve more than 400 percent during the first three months of life. Making eye contact is "at the bottom of (the boy's baby's) list of interesting things to do."
Men use about 7,000 words a day, women about 20,000. Connecting through talking activates the pleasure centers in a girl's brain (providing) a major dopamine and oxytocin rush, which is the biggest, fattest neurological reward you can get outside of an orgasm.
Oxytocin (the "love" hormone) is released in the brain after a 20-second hug from a partner-triggering the brain's trust circuits. The sexual desire trigger for both genders is the androgen testosterone. Men have on average ten to 100 times more testosterone than women. Early on, female ovaries begin producing "huge amounts of estrogen that marinate the little girl's brain" and spur the growth of brain circuits and centers for connection.
When she's under stress, a woman's desire for sex and physical touch shuts down, perhaps because "the stress hormone cortisol blocks oxytocin's action in the female brain."
Men have two and a half times the brain space devoted to sexual drive as women do, as well as larger brain centers for action and aggression.
The areas of the brain that track emotion and memory formation are larger and more sensitive in the female brain.
Rejection, it turns out, actually hurts like physical pain because it triggers the same circuits in the brain.
Men notice subtle signs of sadness in a face only 40 percent of the time; women pick up on them 90 percent of the time.
Our brains size up a potential partner, and if he/she fits our ancestral wish list, we get a jolt of chemicals that dizzy us with a rush of laser-focused attraction. Lucy Silberman, Adapted from The Female Brain |
