Greetings!
Last week I shared with you the great news for California where the justices ruled that people have a fundamental 'right to marry' the person of their choice and that gender restrictions violate the state Constitution's equal protection guarantee.
However, this week I have some disappointing news to share. According to Jeana Frazzinni, from Basic Rights Oregon, a three-judge panel of the Oregon Court of Appeals rejected arguments to overturn the 2004 ballot measure amending Oregon's constitution to exclude gay and lesbian couples from marriage.
This is what else Jeana Frazzinni, from Basic Rights Oregon had to say...
"We respectfully disagree with the Court's analysis. The fact is that Constitutional Amendment 36 made a fundamental change to Oregon's constitution, declaring that laws excluding certain couples from marriage could not be reviewed by the courts. This revision undermines the very purpose of the constitution itself, making some couples "more equal" than others under the law.
Under the Oregon Constitution, such a fundamental change in our law must come by a referral from the legislature and not by an initiative petition. The supporters of this chose the wrong mechanism for enacting it into law.
Ultimately, we believe that using the initiative process to treat one group of citizens differently insults the spirit of the constitution and violates every Oregon tradition of fairness. Basic Rights Oregon and the plaintiffs in Martinez v Oregon will appeal this case to the Oregon Supreme Court, and we will continue to work every day until discrimination and injustice are removed from the document all Oregonians rely upon to affirm our most basic rights as citizens."

Metaphysical Store and Counseling

Two of our Lavender Womyn members, Torrii and Lisa, have been on a journey to bring to Salem a metaphysical place of healing, growth, inspiration, and support. If you remember places like Rosebud -n- Fish or Pearls of Wisdom, well this place will be along those lines, only much, much more. It will be called...JOURNEY'S.
However, they need your help to bring it to life. Please visit the Lavender Womyn's Message Board to find out more. The subject title is "We need your help."

Triangle Society - Chemeketa Idol Hi everyone, my name is Dusty Rose and I am the President of The Triangle Society at Chemeketa Community College. Our club provides support and education for the LGBT communtity and our supporters in the straight community. We are asking for your support (don't worry, we don't want money).
My partner and I have been putting on an American Idol type of show called Chemeketa Idol. Until now, we didn't realize what an impact we have on students and our community. We recieved an award today for the best activity that the college has ever been involved with. I am proud and now want to share this fun with you. May 28th and May 29th, outside building 2 in the old quad, our show is at 3pm and stops at 6 pm. We have eight contestants and three judges who are our Paula, Simon and Randy. Me? I am Dusty Rose AKA Ryan Seacrest. Come on out and help us pick a winner. These students are pumped up. We also have other shows we put on like the drag queens and singers all over Salem. Some times I even sing if you ask me too. Hope to see everyone out there.

CASA For Children
Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) are community volunteers who are specially trained, and appointed by a Marion County Juvenile Court Judge to speak and advocate for abused and neglected children who are wards of the court. CASA volunteers act as the Judges' eyes and ears by keeping them informed of the child's health and welfare during state custody. CASA volunteers introduce to the Judge carefully researched past and present unbiased information for determining action that will be in the child's best interest.
The CASA continues with a child's case until it is closed, ensuring the child's safety throughout the process, and keeping the child welfare and juvenile justice system alert to the child's needs.

From Chuck of The Capitol Forum
Mini Auction, Dance Music, and a Time to remember old friends! - This Sunday, May 25th This weekend is Memorial Day weekend, so along with a mini community auction at 7:30 PM on Sunday we will also have music and a time to remember all those who have gone before us. There are many of our brothers and sisters who have worked hard for Capitol Forum, ISCWE, Gay & Lesbian Rights, MCC, Lavender Womyn, and other groups that have passed away over the years. We should remember them this weekend and always. Also, although The Domestic Partnership only started this year, already two (one male & one female) have lost their partners through death. We will start the auction this Sunday at 7:30 PM to give people time to do things during the day. After the auction we will have a guest DJ if he is able to make it down from Portland. He is Danny Hayes (aka Disco Danny) who DJ'd at Tara's Pub, Wooden Shoe, Cassady's, Bumpers, Vi-dels, Rich Gardens, Upper Deck, Sneakers, and the Point After. Yes, those were all gay places in Salem starting in 1975 (New Year's Eve was the opening of Tara's Pub). The bar has free pool and drink specials all day. Come out and visit with old friends. We can use donations of auction items for this week-end and also June 11th for our last auction and Tea Dance until after summer. We can use lots of items: Wine, Candy, Candles, Gift Certificates, Plants, Gifts, etc. For questions e-mail: thecapitolforum@aol.com Legal Resources are available in Salem! With Domestic Partnerships comes a new need for information and legal rights. We have had several calls about Lawyers over the months so I am listing the local ones again. Both Monica Pacheco and Keith Hayes of Salem are excellent lawyers. They both have business cards on the Capitol Forum web site at: www.capitolforum.org ISCWE Investitures Sunday, June 1st at Southside Speakeasy Star Emperor 31 Stingray Slaughter and Star Empress 31 Simply Devine along with the Imperial Sovereign Court of the Willamette Empire invite you to Investitures for the 31st Reign.
