Greetings!
Kathy and I had a new experience last Monday evening. For the first time ever since we have been together (almost 5 years), we were HOME ALONE! That's right. There wasn't a single kid in the house. All four of them were gone for a solid 40 minutes! And, the dog was even outside.
This was a tough concept for me to grab onto. I kept running through my head where each child was at...Kyle is at work, Shelby is at band, Jesse and Dylan are with their dad. Now, who am I forgetting? I must be forgetting someone. And then, I'd run the list through my head, again, and come up with the same answer...we are actually HOME ALONE!
So, I whispered these words into Kathy's ear..."Do you realize there are NO kids in the house?" Her eyes widened, she looked at me, and she said, "REALLY?!", with excitement and disbelief. So, I ran the list off to her of where each kid was at and asked her if I was forgetting anyone, and she said I hadn't. I'll leave the imagination up to you as to what the next words were out of her mouth. But, let me just say that I never realized that having the bedroom door "OPEN " could be such a freeing and exciting feeling!

Eugene Lavender Womyn
We'd like to host a kid-friendly scrabble night.
In our previous town, we used to have a regular Saturday night Scrabble night. It had a potluck element, in that folks brought stuff to eat when they could, but we always had something on hand, as well. Other games are good, too: backgammon, chess, apples-to-apples.
Let's go with a 2nd Saturday thing, April 12 being the first one. We'll start around 5 or 6pm. Our kids will be here (3 and 5), heading to bed around 7 or so. We're usually petered out by 10 or 11pm, although it's not unknown for scrabble to persist late into the night given the right conversation and beverages ;-)
If you'd like to come, please click here to request directions.
Peace, Erin |

Lloyd Chapman for Mayor
Dear Supporters,
It's been an active 7 weeks of campaigning for mayor of Salem. I am inspired by the excitement I feel from opinion makers, neighbors and strangers I meet in Salem. I'd like to tell you where we are at and where we are going.
First of all, thanks to all of you who have been working with me on this challenging and rewarding endeavor. I have more than 50 active volunteers that have brought us this far. Please read on to see what we've been up to, but let me put in a quick pitch for two easy ways to help, lawn signs and letters to the editor. (details below) Fundraising: We've received over $8,000 in cash contributions with in-kind contributions close to $10,000. Check out the graphic art/video services of Jane Reeder of Communication Concepts and Allen Taylor of NowVideo on our website and CCTV. We have 2-3 mailings planned that will cost at least $10,000 more than currently on hand, so money is still an issue. Starting soon, we will add a phoning strategy to identify supporters, and then later, making sure they vote. Meeting Voters: As of today we've reached 2,200 households through door-to-door canvassing. We've been doing group canvassing every Saturday. I, along with many individuals, have been going out during the week. I met hundreds of Salem voters at the Obama rally Meeting Opinion Makers: I've attended 8 neighborhood association meetings, with 8 more scheduled. I've attended City Club meetings, Marion & Polk County Democratic Central Committee meetings, and am meeting with local business owners. We've gotten endorsements from the Oregon League of Conservation Voters, Central Labor Council and Marion and Polk Dems and I'm optimistic about SEIU and the Carpenters. I've been to 6 ''house parties", with 10 more scheduled to date. They've been very effective in raising money and spreading the word about my campaign. Other Visible Efforts: Letters to the SJ editor - 3 (we need more) Please feel free to contact Rob Gould at rob27@comcast.net for ideas or help Yard signs - 800 to distribute (150 have been spoken for -- we need your help here. If you've offered to take one already, could you find a home for 5 or 10 or 15 more with your neighbors and friends?) Website: lloydchapmanformayor.com -- learn more about me and my positions, contribute on line. MySpace: www.myspace.com/lloyd4mayor -- reaching young voters and volunteers CCTV: over 200 spots will be airing on CCTV (channel 22) from now until May 20. See the spots on the website and/or MySpace. We are working hard and hope you will join us to bring Salem together to improve our quality of life on May 20. Please share this with others in your email network. And thanks again. Lloyd | |
