Greetings!
NOTE: This Newsletter is a day early because I won't be able to send it out on Saturday.
Many thanks to those dedicated women who showed up for bowling on such a beautiful, sunny day. One couple even drove down from Tigard. We had a total of 14 people, and 12 of them who tackled bowling. Then, most of the women went out for Mexican food afterwards. Here's what one woman had to say about the bowling event...
"It has turned out that going bowling led us to make new friends within the lesbian community, and I want to thank you for that. ~ Jenny U.
It's great to see new friendships continue to develop through Lavender Womyn. For more testimonies on what Lavender Womyn has done for our community, click here.
(Photo above: I hope many of you saw the Lunar eclipse on Wednesday, February 20th. The next one will be in the year 2010.) |

Salem loses one of our own
It is with great sadness we have to announce the death of Carole Nielsen-Fewx (former co-owner of Jackson's Books). Carole passed away at her home late Sunday evening. Although Carole was not gay, she was very active in the Salem Gay & Lesbian community. She was former Ms. Capitol Forum and served on the Board of Directors of the Capitol Forum and Lifeline AIDS Project. For two years she chaired the committee that did the annual Capitol Forum Golf Tournament - working long hours to make it a success. She also helped at Connie's annual show for the charities. Carole was also co-chair of the annual Academy Awards Festivities at the Southside Speakeasy. Carole was active in all types of charities and activities though out Oregon. She will be missed by all. Carole was planning the annual " An Evening with the Oscars" party at the Southside Speakeasy to be held this Sunday, and to memorialize her, the event will go on. Southside Speakeasy helps Oscar celebrate 80 years of film and fashion. Join us this Sunday, February 24th by 5 PM. A great buffet and raffle ticket are part of the evening for $15 per person. Prizes for best dressed and ballot winner. Come dressed for the Red Carpet, but not required. If you love the movies you'll love this event. For reservations call 503-362-1139. Flyer is on web site at: www.southsidespeakeasy.com

LGBTIQQA Potluck
This event is a bit late for this month, but it will be a monthly event. Contact Steven for more details.
By popular demand, I wish to announce the revival of monthly Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer Questioning & Intersex (LGBTIQQA) Potluck Dinners! Naturally, Allies (that would be the "A" in LGBTIQQA) are included and invited as well, so please feel free to distribute this information to friends, family, and others far and wide.
The First United Methodist Church (which some community wags in town refer to as the "Corvallis LGBT Community Center") has agreed to a monthly reservation on the third Thursday of each month from 6-8 p.m. in their Martha Room (downstairs/basement looking out onto the courtyard - with the added benefit that it has a fireplace and its own kitchen facilities!).
*The first Potluck will be Thursday, February 21, 2008, 6-8 p.m.* (this date is past, but join in next month)
Most of you will recall that implementation of the new domestic partnership laws was thwarted (I love that word!) when Judge Mosman put a last minute stay in place against them. As a result, all of the carefully planned celebrations arranged for that day went awry. This potluck is intended to be a community celebration of those 54 (to date) Benton County couples who were able to register after the stay was lifted, and those couples who registered in other surrounding counties.
First United Methodist Church is located at 1165 NW Monroe Ave, Corvallis, OR 97330 (at the corner of NW 11th Street). I'm told there is an event happening at the church on the same night, so parking could be a little tight, but there is plenty of street parking and a second lot one block west of the church on Munroe. The main parking lot is behind the church and is entered from Jackson Street (1 block north of Munroe).
So that we don't wind up with just wedding (or domestic partner) cake to eat, and as is customary here in Corvallis, why don't we divide up the food this way? If your last name begins with the letters A - L, bring a salad or dessert large enough to feed 8 people besides yourself and your guest(s). If your last name begins with the letters M - Z, bring a main dish large enough to feed 8 people besides yourself and your guest(s). We'll reverse that for next month and alternate from month to month.
If you don't cook, bring drinks, ice, paper goods (paper plates, plastic utensils, napkins, cups (no Styrofoam, please), or tablecloths). Regardless of what you'll be bringing, let me know via return email so I can coordinate just a little bit and guesstimate how many people we'll be having to dinner.
I look forward to seeing you all and breaking bread together.
Hugs,
Steven

New Guides Out On New Laws For LGBT Oregonians
(GayNews, Portland, Oregon, February 20, 2008) -- Lambda Legal, together with the Oregon Gay and Lesbian Legal Association (OGALLA), has published two concise guides to help lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Oregonians know their rights under two sweeping laws that went into effect this year.
"The new laws grant extensive protections and privileges to LGBT Oregonians," said Stefan Johnson, Help Desk Staff Attorney for Lambda Legal, "but they won't help if people don't understand them. The guides spell out what they need to know to protect their relationships, their jobs and their families under the new legislation."
The Oregon Equality Act, also known as SB2, protects LGBT people from discrimination in employment, housing, and schools, and establishes criminal penalties for hate crimes against transgender people. The Oregon Family Fairness Act sets up a domestic partner registry for same-sex couples and grants most of the rights and responsibilities of marriage, including hospital visitation, medical decision-making, inheritance, spousal protections and child support upon dissolution of the partnership, and more.
"As the movement for recognition of loving families in various forms marches forward, the Oregon Gay & Lesbian Law Association is proud to co-sponsor this publication," said OGALLA Co-Chair Douglas Friend. "Our hope is that it educates and empowers all who read it."
The guides, readily available at www.lambdalegal.org, spell out what rights the laws grant -- and what they don't -- along with what LGBT Oregonians need to do if they feel they've been discriminated against. The guide to Oregon's domestic partnership law also gives detailed information about the responsibilities that registered domestic partners will now bear, including responsibility for each other's debts.
