August 2010

Greetings!

"Fore"! "Oh sorry". "Fore"!.."Oops, sorry again".  Did you know why "Fore!" is shouted as a warning during a golf game when it appears possible that a golf ball may hit other players or spectators?

The mention of the term in an 1881 British Golf Museum indicates that the term was in use at least as early as that period. The term means "ahead", and it is believed to come from the military "beware before", which was shouted when a battery fired behind friendly troops. Now it is often used to warn other players ahead that the golf ball is coming towards them, so they won't get hit.

Now that we learned something new today can you tell it is almost time for the PWI annual golf tournament? Our annual golf and spa day is this Friday August 13th. We would like to thank all of our sponsors, golfers and participants as this is our biggest fund raiser of the year. It should be a beautiful day. Our amazing golf committee headed by our very own Terri Carver has been working tirelessly to ensure a good time for all. We hope to see you there.

Next up on September 30th  PWI will have our first social event. The location is Fifty Seven Degrees Wine Emporium in Mission Hills located off of the 5 freeway and Washington Street.  Cost includes 2 glasses of wine and appetizers in their private outdoor patio area.
We will be starting our Progressive Member Drawing at this event.  All members will be entered and if your name is drawn and you are in attendance then you win $50.  If the winner is not in attendance then the money rolls over to our October meeting and the prize increases to $100.
Look for an email invitation next week with the details.  Thank you Tram for your hard work in organizing this event!

The men and women of PWI continue to amaze me with their hard work to coordinate events that raise money for our chosen charities. The dedication to philanthropy and good works in addition to holding down jobs and balancing family responsibilities is not always easy. I am so proud to be associated with this organization.
Good things are happening at PWI, and if you are not a member and are interested in becoming one please contact our membership chair Tram Phan at [email protected] or 619- 929-2633. We look forward to hearing from you!

"Fore"!..."oppps now where is my favorite ICW golf ball?" "Fore"!
