Greetings!

I hope this note finds you in good health and full of holiday cheer, and I wish you the best for 2009.

My passion for lavender has led me on some amazing adventures in 2008. My "lavender fields forever" road trip in California last summer introduced me to
Clairmont Farms, Green Acres Lavender Farm, Rock Hill Estate and Matanzas Creek Estate Gardens.

Closer to home, the exquisite lavender farms on Vashon Island - Crescent Falls Organic Farm, Fox Farm and Lavender Hill Farm - provided the perfect places for capturing photographs for my upcoming book.

I have been testing, tasting and fine-tuning the recipes. Dare I say it? My book of lavender recipes will be published in 2009.

Stay tuned for more details on the book.

Thank you,

Lavender: Flavor for 2009

Chicken w. Lavender

Although lavender has been used in cooking for centuries, some people are just discovering how this herb can brighten a cocktail or add a floral note to blueberry muffin.

On New Year's Day, NPR discussed the top five flavors for 2009. Number one? You guessed it: LAVENDER.

Lavender is expected to move beyond the home and personal care categories and into food and beverage this year. Already we have seen this trend in Dagoba's Lavender Chocolate Bar, Lavender Cosmos at Seattle's Palisades Restaurant and in theWashington Post's recipe for Onion Pie with Lavender, Bacon and Blue Cheese.

Lavender, paired with ingredients such as berries, citrus fruits and honey, brings a naturally soothing, aromatic and fresh quality to food and beverages.

Wondering about the other flavor trend setters for 2009? They include cactus, persimmon, Chimichurri, and Masala.

I now understand why 2009 is the perfect year for my cookbook!

The Harringtons
Susan Harrington and Jack, her "assistant lavender wrangler," delivered ten freshly cut bunches of lavender to me at a small cafe in Edmonds, Washington. As I looked out the cafe window, I saw the ferry pull into the dock. Next, I spotted Susan carrying an enormous basket full of lavender, walking with Jack towards the cafe.

In the glow of an early August evening, the three of us enjoyed a cold glass of Chardonnay before doing the deal. As you can guess, this basket of lavender was an attention grabber. The waitress asked if the lavender was for a wedding. We explained the fragrant flowers would be used in the photo shoot for my book about cooking with lavender. By the way, these picture-perfect bunches, were grown at Labyrinth Hill.

PoochThis serene dog lives at Clairmont Farms in California. I suspect the fragrant lavender keeps the pooch relaxed. He looks like he's in the right place at the right time.
