Discover Lavender
In coffee drinks, magic wands, sugar and more!

August 2007
Greetings!

As the summer season moves toward fall, it seems like a good time to pause and recap the joys lavender has brought us this year.  From lavender mochas to beautiful fields and from lavender sugar to fragrant lavender wands, this herb just keeps on giving!

On a personal note, I have been learning how to make wreaths using lavender along with wild flowers and grasses. You may want to try your hand at wreath-making, too! I have included some quick tips in this newsletter for those of you who want to give it a try.

Lavender Mocha
Straight off the Vashon Island ferry,  I was in need of caffeine.  I headed into town to the  Vashon Island Coffee Roasterie.  Delighted to discover the perfect drink to mark the moment, I ordered the Lavender Mocha.  After all, this was the weekend of the Vashon Island Lavender Harvest Celebration.

WOW!  What a taste - coffee, chocolate, steaming milk sweetened with lavender syrup and topped with whipped cream sprinkled with a few fresh lavender buds - this drink was a sensual experience.

The lavender highlighted the richness of the chocolate. The flavors blended deliciously, the texture smooth and creamy.  The floral fragrance was subtle and enticing.

This drink is not available at Starbucks, but somehow I think it might lose some of its charm served anywhere else other than Vashon Island in July!
Are These Really Magic?
Girls w. Lavender Wand

Lavender Wands seem magical.  They are easy to make and offer a whimsical way to scent your linen closet, your car or your lingerie drawer.  The best instructions giving you step-by-step directions come from my friend, Susan Harrington.  Susan is a lavender grower and the proprietor of Labyrinth Hill.

You will need fresh lavender and a little ribbon.  Have fun and enjoy playing with these sturdy stems.  You can even weave small baskets that are fragrant and sweet.
Lavender Sugar: The Sweet Taste of Summer
Lavender Sugar in 15 minutes
Lavender Sugar is a great way to use lavender.  Easy to make, this fragrant sugar enhances blueberries, strawberries and raspberries.  When a teaspoon of it is added to iced tea, you notice a floral note, both subtle and exotic.  When you mix up your favorite muffin recipe, use lavender sugar in place of regular sugar.

Packaged in a decorative jar, labeled and tied with a ribbon, lavender sugar makes a thoughtful and delicious gift.

KathyIn closing, I want to express my gratitude to all the people who have filled this summer with memorable moments.  Thank you!

Summer Flower Wreath
Wreath
A wreath of summer flowers delights my sense of whimsy and beauty.  The circular form reminds me that we are always coming and going from here to there and back again.  Just the way it should be.  The flowers tell us the world is full of beauty, just look around and it is everywhere.  Taking time to savor the simple pleasures in this world soothes my spirit.
