Greetings!
The 2012 Southwest Alaska Economic Summit & SWAMC Membership Meeting was a great success this year. The event was well-attended and contained many thought-provoking presentations and panels. The discussion among the attendees was pretty lively as we debated about alternative energy, oil taxes, fish management, Arctic shipping, broadband, transportation, and more topics impacting our region's economic development. To see a list of all presenters and their presentations (if in file form), click here. We also have a list of attendees here. Read on for a recap of the Conference.

Three Resolutions Passed at Membership Meeting SWAMC's membership passed three resolutions at their meeting on Friday the 17th:
- 12-03: A resolution requesting the Alaska Legislature to revisit Alaska Statute 29.45.500, requiring municipalities to match the current prime interest rate set by the Federal Reserve at the time of payment.
- 12-04: A resolution urging the Alaska state legislature to pass HB 250 to extend the renewable energy grant fund.
- 12-05: A resolution supporting HB 261, granting low interest loans for the acquisition of State of Alaska Limited Entry Permits for new fishermen.
Several other issues requiring support came up during the Membership Meeting but the resolutions were not complete at that time, so the SWAMC Board will take these up at their March meeting. These include support for HB 294 (raising the PCE cap), studying LNG delivery and infrastructure systems for Western Alaska, and assorted fishing topics. |
Thanks Very Much to All SWAMC Supporters Thanks to all the conference attendees, sponsors, speakers and exhibitors. It's always great to see people come together and work to build consensus around such important issues. Events like these are what make SWAMC an effective organization.
Next year's event is set for February 21-22, 2013 at the Hotel Captain Cook, and we're already thinking ahead on great topics based on what we heard last week...
That's it for the recap. Talk to you soon. |
