Greetings!registration button
The early registration period for the 2012 Southwest Alaska Economic Summit & SWAMC Membership Meeting ends today, February 2. After all the emails, I hope you remember that the event is scheduled for February 16-17 at the Hotel Captain Cook. The agenda is almost set, and you can see the draft version here. We hope to see you in two weeks; let us know if you have any questions. Thanks!
Norway Policy Tour: Is There a Lesson in There?norway
Back in the summer, several legislators, agency heads, and other Alaskans traveled to Norway to pick up some policy pointers. Among other things, the delegates learned how the Norwegians interact with the oil companies doing business in their country (primarily off shore), how leases  are negotiated, and of the direct financial interest the government takes in exploration and production. Additionally, the world's third largest oil exporter provides its own electricity needs almost exclusively through renewable energy in the form of hydro. Two of the tour participants, Rep. Bryce Edgmon from House District 37 and Chris Rose of REAP, will be on hand to talk of their experience and outcomes from that trip. Leading off the discussion will be Lt. Governor Mead Treadwell, a man most familiar with Norway and Arctic issues. The LG will also highlight some other economic opportunities he spots for the State and the Southwest region. This interesting and informative talk will form the luncheon presentation on Thursday, Feb. 16th.
DCCED Commissioner Bell Part of Fish Friday Presentations
comm bell Susan Bell, Commissioner of the Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development, will be before the  conference attendees on Friday morning, following ADF&G Commissioner Campbell. Ms. Bell has been Commissioner since July, 2010, and this will be her first formal address to the SWAMC membership. She will discuss the Department's role in economic and community development in the state, and focus on their tasks in rural Alaska, especially the Southwest region. DCCED is already a strong participant in the fishing industry by providing financing programs such as the Commercial Fishing and Fishing Enhancement Loan Funds. The Department, with direction from the Governor, also has a new philosophy on development and investment across Alaska, and we are sure to hear more about it on Feb. 17th.
Conference Sponsorships and Vendor Booths Still Available
We may be just two weeks away from the 2012 SWAMC Conference, but sponsorship opportunities remain for those looking to support the event and make it one of the better in recent memory. Click the link below to sponsor online, or contact our office at 907.562.7380. Sponsorships always help us cover costs and achieve the most meaningful outcomes of the meeting, but more importantly they show that your community or organization is an investor in the development of Southwest Alaska.
Additionally, we also have several exhibitor booth spots available. These booths are a chance to show off your business, organization, or agency, and come with a conference registration. What a bargain! Again, contact our office for more details on either program.

SWAMC Meeting to Revisit Coastal Management
botelho A major topic in the last Legislative session- and for the past year, really- the Alaska Coastal Management Program (ACMP) resurrection will be on the agenda the afternoon of Feb. 16th, right after lunch. Juneau Mayor and Alaska Sea Party Chairman Bruce Botelho will give attendees an update on the coastal management initiative and where the prospects of the program currently stand. ACMP sunsetted last July, but with six districts alone in the SWAMC region, many members have questions about the program and want to learn what can be done to revive, restore, and possibly improve upon the past iterations of coastal management in Alaska. This brief update will hopefully inform us of what's being done inside and outside the lawmaking process to develop a lasting and meaningful coastal management program.
