Alaska's Congressional Delegation to Address SWAMC On the morning of February 16th, we will attempt to harness the powers of information technology to have a live video chat with Senators Begich and Murkowski and Congressman Young. We expect the delegation to discuss the various attempts to getting the national economy jump started, but there are plenty of other issues to cover that hit home for Southwest Alaska residents, businesses, and local governments. Some of these include the National Oceans Policy- where does that proposal stand these days? Is there continued talk of using the Universal Service Fund for rural broadband build-out? We will also discuss the funding picture for fisheries science and Coast Guard operations, rural Alaska aviation concerns, by-pass mail, and any other topics the Conference and the delegation see fit. Come with your questions prepared as we dive into the issues that matter in 2012. |
Southwest Alaska Transportation Plan: What to Expect for 2012 This year's Annual Conference will kick off with a presentation from Alaska DOT&PF, Dowl Engineering, and Northern Economics, part of the team tackling the newest update to the SW Transportation Plan. This triumvirate is examining the conditions and forecasts necessary to recommend multi-modal improvements to the region's transportation system, including docks and harbors, roads, airports, and ferry movement. Every few years, it seems, Southwest Alaskans have to get reacquainted with the regional transportation planning processes used by DOT&PF. 2011 (Phase I) and now 2012 (Phase II) are no different; or maybe they are. That's what we're hoping to find out at this session on the morning of February 16th. |
SWAMC Membership Annual Business Meeting Held on Feb 17 Is there a resolution you'd like to bring before the body? Interested in becoming a SWAMC Board member, or nominating someone else? Have strong feelings for a particular policy or bill that SWAMC should get behind? If so, then you'll want to be present for the organization's Annual Business meeting, taking place Friday the 17th at 10 AM.
Due to some natural turnover and Directors moving out of state, there will be an unusually large number of seats on the Board open for elections this year. The following describes the composition of the SWAMC Board and which seats will be voted on at the business meeting:
Board of Directors - General Composition - Comprised of eleven members
- Six seats are designated for Municipal Members
- Five seats are designated for Associate Members, two of those being "At-Large"
- Twenty-five percent of the Board members must be of minority status, including Alaska Native, Black or African-American, Asian, or Spanish surname. This can best be accomplished if each sub-region elects at least one person of minority status.
Sub-region Representatives Nine of the board members represent specific sub-regions. There are three sub-regions with three seats each as follows: - Aleutian/Pribilof - two municipal seats, one associate seat
- Bristol Bay - two municipal seats, one associate seat
- Kodiak - two municipal seats, one associate seat
Terms SWAMC Board members serve two year terms and are elected on a staggered basis to ensure both continuity and predictable turnover. For 2012, the following seats are up for election:
