Seafood Industry Showcased at 2012 Economic Summit
SWAMC's Annual Economic Summit usually features many of the elements that compose or affect our region's economy, including energy, transportation, development policies, and more. Those topics will all be on this year's agenda, naturally, but the major theme of this year's event will be the importance of the seafood industry on the region. That's not a surprise considering the influence the sector has on the majority of Southwest communities, and it's the reason we chose to title the 2012 meeting Southwest Alaska: The Genuine Aquabounty. But this year we want to refocus on the various facets of the seafood industry "cluster" in the SWAMC region economy, including the regulators, processors, communities, CDQs, and other factors that make up a working waterfront in a fishing

community. Take a look at the agenda here to see what we mean. Friday the 17th is dedicated to fishing.

In addition to the afternoon panel just described, we'll also hear from Fish and Game Commissioner Cora Campbell. The Commissioner has not addressed the SWAMC membership since she was appointed to her position in 2010. This will give us a chance to get the Department's thoughts on some State fishing issues, especially those important to the Southwest region, and maybe even a seasonal forecast or two for the area.

Also on tap that Friday is a lunch presentation from Dr. Jim Murphy, Economics Professor at UAA. Dr. Murphy is a member of the Scientific & Statistical Committee on the NPFMC, and has performed numerous lab experiments to address the economics of natural resource issues. For our lunch that day he will describe work he has done with fisheries management using experimental economics. The presentation will be light, informative, and even fun, and will involve some audience participation!

In the coming weeks and days we'll send out more information on the conference, including more agenda topics and reminders for the Membership Business Meeting on Feb. 17th. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact our office. See you next month.
